COMPUTER BOOTING AND SHUTDOWN PROCESSES

SUBJECT: Digital Technologies
CLASS: JSS 1 (Basic 7)
TERM: First Term
WEEK: 9
DURATION: 80 Minutes

INTRODUCTION

A computer must be started correctly before it can be used. In the same way, it should be properly shut down after use. Starting a computer is not simply a matter of pressing the power button. The computer performs a series of operations before it becomes ready for the user.

The process of starting a computer is called booting. When the work is completed, the user should follow the proper shutdown procedure to close programs and turn off the computer safely.

MEANING OF BOOTING

Booting is the process of starting a computer and loading the operating system into the computer's memory so that the computer becomes ready for use.

When a computer is switched on, it checks some of its hardware components and then loads the operating system. The operating system provides the environment through which the user can interact with the computer.

Examples of Operating Systems

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Linux
  • macOS
  • Android
  • iOS

TYPES OF BOOTING

There are two commonly discussed types of booting:

Type Meaning
Cold Booting Starting a computer from a completely powered-off state.
Warm Booting Restarting a computer that is already powered on.
Note: The exact startup procedure may differ slightly depending on the type of computer and operating system being used.

STEPS IN BOOTING A COMPUTER

The following are the basic steps for starting a desktop computer:

  1. Make sure the computer and its cables are properly connected.
  2. Switch on the main power supply where applicable.
  3. Switch on the UPS if one is being used.
  4. Press the power button on the system unit.
  5. Switch on the monitor if it has a separate power button.
  6. Wait while the computer performs its startup checks.
  7. Allow the operating system to load.
  8. Log in if a password or user account is required.
  9. The computer is now ready for use.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BOOTING?

During booting, the computer performs several important operations. It checks important hardware components and begins loading the operating system. The operating system then prepares the computer for the user.

Stage What Happens
Power On The computer receives electrical power.
Hardware Check The computer performs initial checks on important hardware.
Operating System Loading The operating system is loaded into memory.
Login The user may enter a password or select an account.
Ready State The computer becomes ready for the user to work.

MEANING OF SHUTDOWN

Shutdown is the process of properly closing the computer's programs and operating system before turning off the computer.

A computer should normally be shut down using the shutdown command provided by the operating system. This allows the system to close programs and complete important operations before the computer is switched off.

STEPS IN SHUTTING DOWN A COMPUTER

  1. Save all your work.
  2. Close the programs and files you are using.
  3. Click the operating system's Start or power menu.
  4. Select Shut Down or the appropriate shutdown option.
  5. Wait for the computer to complete the shutdown process.
  6. Switch off the monitor if necessary.
  7. Switch off the UPS or power supply when appropriate.
Important: Do not normally switch off a running computer by removing the power supply or pressing the wall socket switch directly. Always use the proper shutdown command first.

WHY PROPER SHUTDOWN IS IMPORTANT

  • It allows programs to close properly.
  • It helps protect unsaved work and data.
  • It reduces the risk of file corruption.
  • It allows the operating system to complete necessary tasks.
  • It helps maintain the computer system properly.

SAFE HANDLING OF COMPUTERS

Computers are electronic devices and should be handled carefully. Proper handling helps protect both the user and the equipment.

Safe Practice Reason
Keep liquids away from computers. Liquid can damage electronic components and create electrical hazards.
Handle the keyboard and mouse gently. It prevents unnecessary damage.
Do not pull cables forcefully. It prevents damage to cables and ports.
Keep the computer area clean. It helps prevent dust and dirt from affecting equipment.
Use the proper shutdown procedure. It helps protect data and the operating system.
Use a UPS where appropriate. It can help provide backup power and protect against some power problems.

BOOTING AND SHUTDOWN COMPARED

Booting Shutdown
Starts the computer. Closes and turns off the computer.
Loads the operating system. Closes the operating system and running programs.
Prepares the computer for use. Prepares the computer to be safely powered off.

CLASS ACTIVITY

Activity 1: Arrange the following actions in the correct order for starting a computer:

  • Allow the operating system to load.
  • Press the computer's power button.
  • Switch on the appropriate power source or UPS.
  • Log in if required.

Activity 2: Under the teacher's supervision, demonstrate how to properly start and shut down a computer.

SUMMARY

Booting is the process of starting a computer and loading its operating system. A computer may be cold-booted from a powered-off state or warm-booted by restarting it. After using a computer, the user should save work, close programs and use the proper shutdown command.

Proper handling and shutdown of computers help protect data, software and hardware. Users should also keep liquids away from computers, handle equipment carefully and avoid unnecessary force on cables and components.

EVALUATION

  1. What is booting?
  2. What is shutdown?
  3. State two types of booting.
  4. List five steps involved in booting a computer.
  5. List four steps involved in shutting down a computer.
  6. State four safe practices for handling computers.
  7. Why is it important to shut down a computer properly?

ASSIGNMENT

Write the correct procedure for starting a desktop computer and the correct procedure for shutting it down. Also list five safety rules that should be observed when using a computer.

INTERACTIVE PRACTICE QUIZ

1. What is booting?
2. Which of the following should normally be done before shutting down a computer?
3. Which of these is a safe computer-handling practice?
4. Which type of booting involves restarting a computer that is already powered on?
