Waste Management in Livestock Farming JS 3 plan
LESSON PLAN: LIVESTOCK FARMING
| Subject: | Livestock Farming / Agricultural Science |
| Class: | JSS 3 (Basic 9) |
| Term: | First Term |
| Week: | Week 6 |
| Topic: | Waste Management in Livestock Farming |
| Subtopics: |
1. Composting process and heap/pit preparation 2. Recycling livestock waste and biogas generation 3. Manure utilization and environmental benefits |
| Duration: | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
- Define composting and describe the step-by-step process of preparing compost manure.
- Explain how livestock waste is recycled (e.g., biogas generation and animal feed reprocessing).
- State the uses and economic/environmental importance of livestock manure on the farm.
INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS
- Samples of cured compost manure, poultry droppings, cow dung, and dry crop residues/wood shavings.
- Diagrams or charts illustrating compost heap layering (Indore/Pit method) and simple biogas digester setups.
- Shovel, watering can, and soil thermometer (for practical illustration).
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Students learned about farm sanitation in JSS 2 and Week 4, understanding that dung and animal waste accumulate daily and must be safely managed.
PRESENTATION STEPS
| Step | Teacher's Activity | Students' Activity |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Introduction | Asks students what happens to the massive amounts of dung produced daily on poultry or cattle farms if left unmanaged. | Respond by highlighting bad odor, fly breeding, water pollution, and disease hazards. |
| Step 2: Composting | Defines composting and explains the biological decomposition of organic waste using the compost heap/pit method (layering carbon and nitrogen materials, moisture, turning). | Listen attentively, observe compost layering charts, and record key ingredients needed for compost decomposition. |
| Step 3: Recycling Livestock Waste | Explains recycling techniques: anaerobic digestion of dung for biogas production (methane fuel) and processing dried poultry litter into fish or ruminant feed supplements. | Examine diagrams of a simple biogas digester and discuss how biogas provides clean cooking energy. |
| Step 4: Manure Utilization | Details uses of farmyard manure (FYM), slurry, and poultry manure in soil fertility improvement, soil structure amendment, and earthworm encouragement. | Compare organic farmyard manure with chemical fertilizers and note soil health benefits. |
| Step 5: Evaluation & Summary | Summarizes key waste management practices on the board and asks evaluation questions. | Answer evaluation questions orally and copy homework assignment. |
EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- Define composting in agricultural waste management.
- State the four essential elements required for aerobic compost decomposition.
- Explain how livestock dung is recycled to generate biogas fuel.
- List four benefits of applying farmyard manure (FYM) to crop soils.
