| Term: | Third Term | Week: | 9 |
| Topic: | Technology and Sustainable Development | ||
| Duration: | 40 Minutes | ||
| Date: | ________________________ | ||
1. Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of technology and sustainable development.
- Identify the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainable development.
- Describe how technology supports sustainable development in different sectors.
- Explain how digital technology can affect the environment.
- State practical ways of using technology responsibly to protect the environment.
2. Instructional Materials
- Computer, laptop or smartphone, where available.
- Pictures of solar panels, modern farms, recycling facilities and digital classrooms.
- Charts or drawings showing renewable energy and waste management.
- Whiteboard and markers.
3. Previous Knowledge
Students have learnt about digital citizenship and the responsible use of technology. They are familiar with common digital devices and everyday environmental challenges such as waste and pollution.
4. Reference Materials
- JSS 3 Digital Technologies lesson note: Technology and Sustainable Development.
- Relevant Digital Technologies textbooks and teacher-prepared materials.
- Examples of local environmental and technology-related practices.
5. Presentation
| Stage / Time | Teacher's Activities | Students' Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction 5 minutes |
Asks students to mention environmental problems in their community, such as waste, pollution and high energy consumption. Introduces the lesson topic. | Mention familiar environmental problems and suggest ways technology might help solve them. |
| Step 1: Meaning of Sustainable Development 7 minutes |
Explains technology and sustainable development. Discusses the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability. | Listen, take notes and explain in their own words why development should consider future generations. |
| Step 2: Technology for Sustainability 8 minutes |
Explains how technology supports agriculture, renewable energy, education, healthcare, transportation and waste management. Gives familiar examples such as solar panels and digital learning resources. | Identify examples of technology that can improve people's lives while conserving resources. |
| Step 3: Environmental Effects of Digital Technology 8 minutes |
Explains that electronic devices require energy and natural resources and may create electronic waste. Introduces green computing and the circular economy: reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish and recycle. | Give examples of responsible device use and explain why electronic waste should be handled properly. |
| Step 4: Class Activity 7 minutes |
Divides students into small groups. Asks each group to propose three ways their school could use technology or digital practices to reduce waste, save energy or improve learning sustainably. | Discuss, record three suggestions and present their ideas to the class. |
| Conclusion 5 minutes |
Summarises the lesson, corrects misunderstandings and asks oral questions to assess learning. | Answer questions and state one sustainable digital habit they can practise. |
6. Board Summary
- Sustainable development: Meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
- Three aspects: Environmental protection, social well-being and economic development.
- Uses of technology: Renewable energy, improved agriculture, digital education, healthcare, transportation and waste management.
- Environmental concerns: Energy consumption, use of natural resources and electronic waste.
- Green computing: Using computers and digital devices in ways that reduce energy use and environmental harm.
- Circular economy: Reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish and recycle.
- Responsible practices: Save electricity, maintain devices, extend device lifespan and use appropriate e-waste collection or recycling services.
7. Evaluation
Ask students the following questions:
- What is sustainable development?
- State the three aspects of sustainable development.
- Mention four ways technology supports sustainable development.
- State two environmental problems associated with digital devices.
- Explain three ways students can practise green computing.
8. Assignment
Write five practical ways your school or community can use technology responsibly to support sustainable development. For each way, briefly explain the benefit.
9. Teacher's Reflection
Were students able to explain sustainable development and identify practical examples of responsible technology use?
