Spreadsheet Applications II SS 1 Lesson Plan
LESSON PLAN
SPREADSHEET APPLICATIONS II
| Subject | Digital Technologies |
| Class | SSS 1 |
| Term | Third Term |
| Week | 3 |
| Topic | Spreadsheet Applications II |
| Duration | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
| Date | ________________ |
Behavioural Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Apply common spreadsheet functions.
- Create simple charts from spreadsheet data.
- Analyse data using spreadsheet tools.
- Organise and interpret simple datasets.
Previous Knowledge
Students have learnt the meaning of spreadsheets, identified rows, columns and cells, entered and edited data, and used basic formulas and cell references.
Instructional Materials
- Computers with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc.
- Projector or display screen, where available.
- Sample dataset showing students' scores.
- Whiteboard and markers.
- Prepared examples of spreadsheet functions and charts.
Teaching Methods
Explanation, demonstration, questioning, guided practical work and individual exercises.
Presentation Steps
| Time | Teacher's Activities | Students' Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 5 minutes | Reviews the previous lesson on basic formulas and asks how a teacher can calculate the average and highest scores of a class. | Recall previous knowledge and suggest ways to calculate and compare scores. |
| 15 minutes | Explains and demonstrates the SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT functions using a sample dataset. | Observe the demonstration, identify the functions and practise entering appropriate formulas. |
| 15 minutes | Explains column, bar, pie and line charts. Demonstrates selecting data and using the Insert menu to create a simple chart. | Identify chart types, select suitable charts for different data and create a simple chart where computers are available. |
| 15 minutes | Demonstrates data analysis by calculating totals, averages, highest and lowest values. Guides students to compare results. | Apply functions to sample scores and identify useful information from the calculated results. |
| 15 minutes | Explains how to organise a dataset using clear headings, consistent formats and one record per row. Guides students in interpreting a sample dataset. | Organise sample data into a table and state conclusions supported by the values. |
| 10 minutes | Assesses students through oral questions and a short practical task involving a function, chart and interpretation of results. | Answer questions, demonstrate the use of a spreadsheet function and explain what the results show. |
| Total | 75 Minutes | |
Evaluation
- Write the functions used to calculate the total, average, highest and lowest values in a cell range.
- Explain how to create a simple chart from spreadsheet data.
- State two ways spreadsheet tools can be used to analyse data.
- Explain three ways to organise a dataset correctly.
- Given a set of scores, identify the highest and lowest values and explain what the average tells us.
Assignment
- Explain the uses of SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT.
- Describe three chart types and state one suitable use for each.
- Create a sample dataset containing five students and their scores in two subjects. Explain how the data can be organised and interpreted.
- State two conclusions that could be drawn from a chart of students' scores.
