LESSON PLAN
SPREADSHEET APPLICATIONS I
| Subject | Digital Technologies |
| Class | SSS 1 |
| Term | Third Term |
| Week | 2 |
| Topic | Spreadsheet Applications I |
| Duration | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
| Date | ________________ |
Behavioural Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of spreadsheets.
- Identify rows, columns and cells in a spreadsheet.
- Enter and edit data in a spreadsheet.
- Use basic formulas and cell references.
Previous Knowledge
Students have basic knowledge of computer operations, keyboard use and entering text and numbers into a computer.
Instructional Materials
- Desktop or laptop computers.
- Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc.
- Projector or display screen, where available.
- Whiteboard and markers.
- Sample spreadsheet showing rows, columns, cells and formulas.
Teaching Methods
Explanation, demonstration, questioning, guided practice and individual practical activities.
Presentation Steps
| Time | Teacher's Activities | Students' Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 5 minutes | Introduces the lesson by asking how a teacher can organise students' scores and calculate totals. Connects responses to spreadsheets. | Respond to questions and mention familiar ways of recording and calculating scores. |
| 10 minutes | Explains the meaning of a spreadsheet and identifies Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice Calc as examples. | Listen, identify spreadsheet applications and state uses of spreadsheets. |
| 15 minutes | Demonstrates rows, columns and cells using a spreadsheet grid. Explains how cell references such as A1 and B3 are formed. | Identify rows, columns and cells and give examples of valid cell references. |
| 15 minutes | Demonstrates how to select cells, enter text and numbers, correct existing entries and save a spreadsheet. | Practise entering and editing sample data in spreadsheet cells. |
| 15 minutes | Explains formulas and cell references. Demonstrates addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using examples such as =A2+B2. |
Identify formula operators and enter basic formulas using cell references. |
| 10 minutes | Guides students to enter two scores, calculate their total with a formula and change one score to observe the recalculated result. | Complete the practical task and observe how the formula result changes when a referenced value is edited. |
| 10 minutes | Reviews the lesson and asks oral and written questions covering all four behavioural objectives. | Answer questions and demonstrate their understanding of spreadsheets, cell references, data entry and formulas. |
| Total | 80 Minutes | |
Evaluation
- Explain the meaning of a spreadsheet and name two spreadsheet applications.
- Differentiate between a row, a column and a cell.
- Identify the cell reference at the intersection of Column C and Row 4.
- Describe how to enter and edit data in a spreadsheet.
- Write a formula to add the values in cells A2 and B2.
- If A1 contains 10 and B1 contains 5, what result will
=A1*B1produce?
Assignment
- Define a spreadsheet and state three uses.
- Explain rows, columns and cells, giving one example of a cell reference.
- Write the steps for entering and editing data in a spreadsheet.
- If A1 contains 20 and B1 contains 5, write formulas to add, subtract, multiply and divide the values.
