2. Screen locks, firewalls and parental controls
3. Device maintenance

1. BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of safety and security features on digital devices.
  2. Identify antivirus software and state its functions.
  3. Describe screen locks, firewalls and parental controls.
  4. Explain how security features help protect devices and users.
  5. Identify appropriate physical and software device-maintenance practices.

2. INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

  • Computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet, where available.
  • Charts showing antivirus software, screen locks and firewalls.
  • Pictures or demonstrations of parental-control settings.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Samples of device-maintenance tools and accessories, where available.

3. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students have used or seen digital devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones. They understand that these devices store information and can be used for communication, learning and entertainment.

Teacher's entry questions:

  1. Why should we protect our phones and computers?
  2. What might happen if an unknown person gains access to your device?
  3. How can you keep a computer or smartphone in good working condition?

4. PRESENTATION STEPS

STEP / TIME TEACHER'S ACTIVITY STUDENTS' ACTIVITY
Step 1: Introduction
5 minutes
Asks students why digital devices need protection and introduces safety and security features. Respond to questions and mention possible threats to digital devices.
Step 2: Antivirus Software
15 minutes
Defines antivirus software, explains malware and discusses scanning, detection, prevention and removal of certain malicious programs. Emphasises the importance of updates and safe downloads. Explain the purpose of antivirus software and identify practices that help reduce malware infections.
Step 3: Screen Locks and Firewalls
15 minutes
Explains PINs, passwords, pattern locks and biometric authentication. Defines a firewall and describes how it monitors and controls network traffic. Identify different screen-lock methods and explain how a firewall helps protect network connections.
Step 4: Parental Controls
10 minutes
Defines parental controls and explains content filtering, screen-time limits, application restrictions and purchase controls. Discuss how parental controls can support safer and more responsible use of digital devices.
Step 5: Device Maintenance
15 minutes
Explains physical care and software maintenance, including keeping devices clean and dry, installing updates, checking for malware and backing up important files. List good maintenance practices and explain how they help protect devices and information.
Step 6: Class Activity and Evaluation
15 minutes
Presents situations involving unauthorised access, suspicious files, unwanted network connections, unsuitable online content and possible data loss. Asks students to identify suitable security features or maintenance practices. Match each situation with an appropriate security feature and answer oral evaluation questions.
Step 7: Summary and Assignment
5 minutes
Summarises the main points and gives students an assignment on security features and device maintenance. Recall key concepts and write down the assignment.

Total Duration: 80 Minutes

5. EVALUATION QUESTIONS

  1. What are safety and security features on digital devices?
  2. Define antivirus software and state three functions.
  3. Mention four types of screen locks or authentication methods.
  4. What is a firewall, and how does it help protect a network?
  5. State three functions of parental controls.
  6. Explain device maintenance.
  7. List four practices that help keep digital devices secure and in good working condition.

6. ASSIGNMENT

  2. Explain three ways antivirus software helps protect a digital device.
  3. State five physical or software maintenance practices for a computer or smartphone.
  4. Draw a table showing five security features or maintenance practices and the purpose of each.

7. TEACHER'S REFLECTION

After the lesson, the teacher should reflect on the following:

  • Were students able to identify and explain the security features discussed?
  • Could students distinguish antivirus software from a firewall?
  • Did students demonstrate an understanding of parental controls and device maintenance?
