SAFETY AND SECURITY FEATURES ON DIGITAL DEVICES

Subject: Digital Technologies
Class: JSS 1 (Basic 7)
Term: Third Term
Week: 4
Topic: Safety and Security Features on Digital Devices
Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)

1. Introduction

Digital devices such as computers, smartphones, tablets and laptops are used for learning, communication, entertainment and storing information. These devices may contain personal information, schoolwork, photographs and other important files.

However, digital devices can be affected by viruses, unauthorised access, harmful software, online threats and physical damage. We therefore need safety and security features to protect our devices, information and users.

2. Meaning of Safety and Security Features

Safety and security features are tools, settings and practices that help protect digital devices, their users and the information stored on them from threats, unauthorised access and damage.

These features help prevent problems and reduce the effects of security threats. Examples include antivirus software, screen locks, firewalls and parental controls.

Importance of Device Security

  • Protects personal and school information.
  • Helps prevent unauthorised access to devices.
  • Reduces the risk of malware infections.
  • Helps protect children from inappropriate online content.
  • Supports the safe and reliable operation of devices.
  • Helps reduce data loss and other security problems.

3. Antivirus Software

Antivirus software is a security program designed to detect, block and remove computer viruses and other forms of malicious software.

Malicious software, often called malware, is software designed to harm a device, disrupt its operation, steal information or perform other unwanted activities. Examples include viruses, spyware, ransomware and some types of Trojan software.

Functions of Antivirus Software

  • Detection: Identifies known or suspicious malicious files and activities.
  • Prevention: Helps block threats before they infect a device.
  • Removal: Can remove or quarantine certain malicious files.
  • Scanning: Checks files, applications and storage locations for possible threats.
  • Real-time protection: Monitors activity for threats as they occur, when the feature is enabled.

How to Use Antivirus Software Responsibly

  1. Use reputable security software or built-in device protection.
  2. Keep the software and its threat definitions updated.
  3. Run scans when necessary.
  4. Pay attention to genuine security warnings.
  5. Avoid installing unknown programs or opening suspicious attachments.
Remember: Antivirus software helps protect a device, but it cannot guarantee complete security. Users must also install updates, avoid suspicious downloads and practise safe online behaviour.

4. Screen Locks

A screen lock is a security feature that prevents people from accessing a device without first passing an authentication step.

Screen locks are available on many smartphones, tablets and computers. They help protect the information stored on a device if it is lost, stolen or left unattended.

Common Types of Screen Locks

  • PIN: A personal identification number used to unlock a device.
  • Password: A secret combination of characters used for authentication.
  • Pattern lock: A pattern drawn across points on a screen.
  • Fingerprint recognition: Uses a registered fingerprint where supported.
  • Facial recognition: Uses supported facial-recognition technology to verify a user.

Good Screen-Lock Practices

  • Choose a PIN or password that others cannot easily guess.
  • Do not share your password with friends or strangers.
  • Set the device to lock automatically after a period of inactivity.
  • Lock the screen before leaving the device unattended.
  • Never use another person's biometric information to gain unauthorised access.

5. Firewalls

A firewall is a security system that monitors and controls network traffic according to defined security rules.

A firewall helps control communication between a device or network and other devices or networks. It can block certain unwanted connections while allowing permitted communication.

Functions of a Firewall

  • Monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic.
  • Blocks connections that do not meet its security rules.
  • Helps reduce the risk of unauthorised network access.
  • Allows permitted network communication.
  • Can help protect devices connected to a network.

Types of Firewalls

  • Software firewall: A program or operating-system feature that controls network traffic on a device.
  • Hardware firewall: A dedicated device or network equipment with firewall functions that helps protect a network.
A firewall does not replace antivirus software or safe browsing habits. Each security measure protects against different types of threats.

6. Parental Controls

Parental controls are settings or tools that allow parents or guardians to manage a child's access to certain digital content, applications, online services and device activities.

Parental controls can help children use digital devices more safely and appropriately. They are available on some computers, smartphones, gaming systems, applications and internet services.

Functions of Parental Controls

  • Content filtering: Restricts access to certain unsuitable websites or content.
  • Screen-time limits: Helps manage the amount of time spent using a device or application.
  • Application restrictions: Limits access to certain applications or controls which applications can be installed.
  • Purchase controls: Helps manage or restrict purchases and downloads.
  • Activity supervision: Some tools provide information about device use or activity, depending on the settings.

Why Parental Controls Are Important

  • They can help reduce children's exposure to inappropriate content.
  • They help parents or guardians manage screen time.
  • They can reduce accidental purchases or unwanted downloads.
  • They support guidance about responsible internet use.
Parental controls are most effective when combined with communication, education and guidance from a trusted adult. They cannot prevent every online risk.

7. Device Maintenance

Device maintenance refers to the activities carried out to keep a digital device clean, secure, reliable and in good working condition.

Proper maintenance can improve device performance, reduce avoidable faults and help protect important information. Maintenance includes both physical care and software security practices.

A. Physical Maintenance

  • Keep devices clean and free from dust where possible.
  • Keep liquids and food away from electronic equipment.
  • Handle devices carefully and avoid dropping them.
  • Keep computers and other devices in well-ventilated places.
  • Use suitable chargers and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Protect devices from excessive heat, moisture and direct physical damage.

B. Software and Security Maintenance

  • Install updates: Update the operating system and applications to receive security fixes and improvements.
  • Scan for malware: Use reputable security tools where appropriate.
  • Remove unnecessary applications: Uninstall software that is no longer needed, where safe to do so.
  • Back up important files: Keep copies of schoolwork and other valuable information in a secure location.
  • Use secure passwords: Protect user accounts from unauthorised access.
  • Check storage space: Remove unwanted files carefully when storage becomes full.
  • Shut down properly: Follow the correct shutdown procedure when required.

Examples of Good Maintenance Practices

Practice Benefit
Updating the operating system Provides security fixes and improvements.
Using a screen lock Helps prevent unauthorised access.
Backing up schoolwork Helps recover files if the original copy is lost or damaged.
Keeping a device clean and dry Helps reduce physical damage.
Using reputable antivirus protection Helps detect and block certain malware threats.
Keeping a firewall enabled where appropriate Helps control unwanted network connections.

8. Comparison of Security Features

Security Feature Main Purpose Example
