Real-Life Application of AI - JSS 2 Note
REAL-LIFE APPLICATION OF AI
Subject: Digital Technologies
Class: JSS 2
Term: Third Term
Week: 8
Topic: Real-Life Application of AI
Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Identify practical applications of AI in education, healthcare and business.
- Explain how AI supports activities in education, healthcare and business.
1. Introduction
We have learnt that artificial intelligence is the ability of computers and machines to perform tasks that normally need human intelligence. AI is used in many areas of life. In this lesson, we study how AI is applied in three important areas: education, healthcare and business.
2. AI in Education
AI is used in education to support students, teachers and schools.
| Application | How AI Supports Education |
|---|---|
| Personalised learning | Learning apps study how a student performs and adjust lessons and exercises to the student's level. |
| Virtual tutors and learning assistants | AI programs answer students' questions and explain topics at any time. |
| Automatic marking | AI can quickly mark objective questions, such as multiple-choice quizzes, and give instant feedback. |
| Language learning | Apps listen to a student's pronunciation, correct mistakes and translate words and sentences. |
| Support for students with special needs | AI tools convert text to speech, speech to text and add captions to videos. |
| Administrative support | AI helps teachers and schools to organise records, timetables and reports. |
Example
A mathematics app notices that a student keeps making mistakes in fractions. It gives more fraction exercises with hints and moves on only when the student improves.
3. AI in Healthcare
AI helps doctors, nurses and hospitals to care for patients more quickly and accurately.
| Application | How AI Supports Healthcare |
|---|---|
| Medical image analysis | AI studies X-rays and scans to help doctors detect signs of disease. |
| Diagnosis support | AI compares a patient's symptoms and test results with large amounts of medical data to suggest possible causes. |
| Patient monitoring | Wearable devices track heart rate, sleep and activity, and alert a patient or a doctor when something is unusual. |
| Virtual health assistants | Chatbots answer simple health questions and remind patients to take medicines or attend appointments. |
| Medical research | AI studies large amounts of data to help scientists discover new medicines. |
| Hospital management | AI helps to schedule appointments and manage records and supplies. |
4. AI in Business
Businesses use AI to serve customers better, work faster and make better decisions.
| Application | How AI Supports Business |
|---|---|
| Customer service chatbots | Answer customers' questions on websites and apps at any time of the day. |
| Product recommendations | Suggest products that a customer may like, based on what the customer viewed or bought. |
| Fraud detection | Banks and payment systems use AI to detect unusual transactions that may be fraud. |
| Sales and demand forecasting | AI studies past sales to predict how much of a product will be needed. |
| Stock and inventory management | AI helps businesses keep track of goods and reorder them on time. |
| Marketing and advertising | AI helps businesses to reach people who are most likely to be interested in a product. |
5. How AI Supports Activities in These Areas
Across education, healthcare and business, AI supports human activities in the following ways:
- Saves time: It completes routine tasks quickly.
- Improves accuracy: It can reduce errors in tasks such as marking, scanning and calculations.
- Personalises services: It adjusts learning, care and advice to individual needs.
- Analyses large amounts of data: It finds patterns that would take people a very long time to find.
- Provides support at any time: Chatbots and virtual assistants can respond day and night.
6. Class Activity: Case Studies
Case Study A: A Secondary School
A school has many students at different levels of understanding. Teachers spend many hours marking quizzes.
Case Study B: A Community Clinic
A clinic has many patients, and doctors need to study many X-rays and records quickly.
Case Study C: A Retail Shop with an Online Store
A shop receives many customer questions and wants to suggest products to customers and detect fraudulent payments.
Tasks for Each Group
- Choose one case study.
- Identify at least two AI applications that could help in the case.
- Explain how each AI application would support the activities.
- Present your answers to the class.
7. Summary
- AI is applied in education, healthcare and business to support people in their activities.
- In education, AI supports personalised learning, virtual tutors, automatic marking and language learning.
- In healthcare, AI supports image analysis, diagnosis, patient monitoring and medical research.
- In business, AI supports customer service chatbots, recommendations, fraud detection and forecasting.
- AI saves time, improves accuracy, personalises services and analyses large amounts of data, while people stay in charge of decisions.
