1. Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of network security.
  2. Identify common network security threats.
  3. Explain the meaning and purpose of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
  4. Describe basic methods of securing network communications.

2. Previous Knowledge

Students have previously learnt about computer networks, network devices and internet connectivity. They understand that computers exchange information over networks and that this information requires protection.

3. Instructional Materials

  • Network security diagrams.
  • Computers and routers, where available.
  • VPN illustrations or diagrams.
  • Projector or display screen.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Prepared examples of network security threats.

4. Teaching Methods

Explanation, discussion, questioning, demonstration, illustration and guided classroom activities.

5. Presentation

Stage / Time Teacher's Activities Students' Activities
1. Introduction
8 minutes
Reviews computer networking and asks students what could happen if an unauthorised person accessed a school's computer network. Introduces the topic, Networking III. Recall previous knowledge and discuss possible dangers of an unprotected network.
2. Network Security
12 minutes
Defines network security and explains its importance in protecting information, preventing unauthorised access and maintaining the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data. Define network security, take notes and state reasons networks need protection.
3. Common Network Security Threats
15 minutes
Explains common threats, including malware, phishing, password attacks, unauthorised access, eavesdropping and denial-of-service attacks. Discusses examples and their effects. Identify the threats, describe their possible effects and suggest ways to avoid them.
4. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
15 minutes
Defines VPN and uses a diagram to explain how it creates an encrypted connection between a device and a VPN endpoint. Discusses remote access, advantages and limitations. Explain the meaning of VPN, interpret the diagram and mention situations where a VPN may be useful.
5. Securing Network Communications
15 minutes
Explains basic security methods, including strong passwords, multifactor authentication, encryption, firewalls, updated security software, secure Wi-Fi and access controls. List security methods and explain how each helps protect network communications.
6. Class Activity
8 minutes
Presents sample situations involving suspicious links, malware and unsecured Wi-Fi. Guides students to identify the threats and recommend preventive measures. Work individually or in pairs to identify threats and suggest appropriate security measures.
7. Conclusion and Evaluation
7 minutes
Summarises the lesson and asks questions about network security, threats, VPNs and protection methods. Answer questions and summarise the key points of the lesson.

Total Duration: 80 Minutes

6. Evaluation

  1. Define network security.
  2. State four reasons network security is important.
  3. Mention five common network security threats.
  4. What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?
  5. State three uses of VPNs.
  6. Explain four methods of securing network communications.

7. Assignment

  1. Explain three common network security threats and their effects.
  2. Describe how a VPN works and state two of its limitations.
  3. List six measures a school can use to secure its computer network.
  4. Explain why using a VPN alone cannot guarantee complete online safety.
