BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain what Microsoft Word is and state its uses.
  2. Identify the basic parts of the Microsoft Word interface.
  3. Open Microsoft Word and create a new document.
  4. Type, edit and save a document.
  5. Format text using basic formatting commands.
  6. Insert a picture into a document.
  7. Explain basic page setup and printing procedures.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students have learned about computer hardware and software. They have also learned how to boot a computer correctly and shut it down safely. They are therefore ready to learn how to use an application program for creating and editing documents.

PRESENTATION

Step Teacher's Activity Students' Activity
1. Introduction Teacher displays a sample typed document and asks students what type of computer application could be used to create it. Students observe the document and suggest possible applications.
2. Meaning and Uses of MS Word Teacher explains that Microsoft Word is a word-processing application used for creating, editing, formatting, saving and printing documents. Students listen and mention documents they can create using Word.
3. Opening MS Word Teacher demonstrates how to locate and open Microsoft Word on the computer. Students follow the demonstration and practise opening Word.
4. Creating and Editing a Document Teacher demonstrates typing text, selecting text, deleting text, inserting text and correcting mistakes. Students type a short paragraph and practise editing it.
5. Formatting Text Teacher demonstrates basic formatting such as bold, italic, underline, font size, font type and text alignment. Students format the heading and paragraph in their document.
6. Saving a Document Teacher demonstrates how to save a document, choose a location and give the file an appropriate name. Students save their documents using an appropriate filename.
7. Inserting Pictures Teacher demonstrates how to insert a picture into a Word document and adjust its position or size. Students insert a picture into their document where available.
8. Page Setup and Printing Teacher introduces basic page setup options such as paper size, orientation and margins, and demonstrates the basic printing process. Students observe the demonstration and identify the basic page setup options.
9. Practical Activity Teacher instructs students to create a short document containing a heading, paragraph and picture, then save it. Students create, format and save their documents under the teacher's supervision.

ASSIGNMENT

Create a short document titled “My School”. Type one paragraph about your school, make the heading bold, change its font size, save the document and, if possible, insert a suitable picture.

TEACHER'S REFLECTION

Teacher should assess students' ability to open Microsoft Word, create and edit a document, apply basic formatting and save their work. Students who experience difficulty should be given additional practical guidance.
