Livestock Breeding Techniques JS 3 Plan
LESSON PLAN: LIVESTOCK FARMING
| Subject: | Livestock Farming / Agricultural Science |
| Class: | JSS 3 (Basic 9) |
| Term: | First Term |
| Week: | Week 3 |
| Topic: | Livestock Breeding Techniques |
| Subtopics: |
1. Natural insemination methods and breeding systems 2. Artificial insemination (AI) concept and procedure 3. Advantages, limitations, and equipment used in AI |
| Duration: | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
- Differentiate between natural mating/insemination and artificial insemination in livestock.
- State the advantages and limitations of artificial insemination.
- List and identify key equipment used in carrying out artificial insemination.
INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS
- Wall charts showing reproductive organs of farm animals and natural mating postures.
- Diagrams or pictures of Artificial Insemination (AI) kit (semen straw, insemination gun, liquid nitrogen tank, speculum, artificial vagina).
- Flowcharts showing steps in semen collection, processing, and deposition into the female reproductive tract.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Students studied basic animal reproduction terms (gestation, mating, heat signs) in JSS 1 and JSS 2 and understand that male and female gametes must unite to produce young ones.
PRESENTATION STEPS
| Step | Teacher's Activity | Students' Activity |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Introduction | Introduces the lesson by asking how a single outstanding bull in Europe can father thousands of calves in Nigeria without leaving its farm. | Suggest answers related to modern technology, frozen semen, and artificial breeding. |
| Step 2: Natural Insemination | Defines natural mating and explains common systems: Pen mating, pasture/flock mating, and hand mating. | Listen attentively, compare hand mating with pasture mating, and note key advantages and disadvantages. |
| Step 3: Artificial Insemination (AI) | Defines AI as manual collection of semen from a superior male and its deposition into the female reproductive tract using tools during heat period. | Observe diagrams showing semen collection and insertion procedures; record definition and key stages. |
| Step 4: AI Tools & Pros/Cons | Displays pictures/charts of AI tools (liquid nitrogen tank, AI gun, semen straws) and discusses advantages (disease control, cost savings) and drawbacks. | Identify equipment from charts, record names, and contrast AI benefits with natural mating limits. |
| Step 5: Evaluation & Summary | Summarizes key differences on the board and evaluates learning through oral review questions. | Answer review questions orally and write down homework instructions. |
EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- Distinguish between natural mating and artificial insemination.
- State four advantages of artificial insemination over natural breeding.
- List four tools or items required to carry out artificial insemination in cattle.
- State two limitations or drawbacks of artificial insemination.
