Lesson Plan: Software Development Life Cycle SS3

LESSON PLAN: SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE (SDLC)

Subject:Digital Technologies
Class:SSS 3
Term:First Term
Week:4
Topic:Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
Duration:80 Minutes (Double Period)
Subtopics:Meaning and importance of SDLC; phases of SDLC; Waterfall model; Agile model; differences between Waterfall and Agile.

1. BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  2. State the importance of SDLC in software development.
  3. Identify and explain the major phases of SDLC.
  4. Explain the Waterfall and Agile development models.
  5. State differences between the Waterfall and Agile models.
  6. Suggest a suitable development model for a given software project.

2. INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

  • Computer system or laptop.
  • Projector or interactive display, where available.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Charts illustrating the SDLC phases.
  • Prepared examples of software projects, such as a school result-management system or CBT portal.

3. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students have learnt about programming concepts, classes, objects and basic software development. The teacher asks students to explain why writing code alone is not enough to produce reliable software.

4. PRESENTATION STEPS

STEP TEACHER'S ACTIVITY STUDENTS' ACTIVITY
Step 1: Introduction (10 minutes) Asks students how a school might develop a CBT examination system. Introduces SDLC as a structured process for planning, developing, testing and maintaining software. Respond to questions and mention activities involved in developing software.
Step 2: Meaning and Importance (10 minutes) Defines SDLC and explains how it improves planning, software quality, teamwork, cost control and maintenance. Define SDLC and state reasons why a structured development process is useful.
Step 3: Phases of SDLC (20 minutes) Explains planning and feasibility, requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance using a school software example. List the phases in sequence and explain the main activity performed at each stage.
Step 4: Waterfall Model (10 minutes) Explains the sequential nature of Waterfall and discusses its advantages and disadvantages. Draw a simple Waterfall sequence and identify a project for which it may be suitable.
Step 5: Agile Model (15 minutes) Explains iterative development, frequent feedback and incremental delivery. Compares Agile with Waterfall. State the features of Agile and give differences between the two models.
Step 6: Evaluation and Conclusion (15 minutes) Asks oral questions, corrects misconceptions, summarises the lesson and gives an assignment. Answer questions, summarise the lesson and record the assignment.

5. EVALUATION QUESTIONS

  1. What is the Software Development Life Cycle?
  2. State four reasons why SDLC is important.
  3. List the seven common phases of SDLC in the correct order.
  4. Explain two characteristics of the Waterfall model.
  5. State three differences between Waterfall and Agile.
  6. Which development model may be suitable when software requirements change frequently? Give a reason.

6. ASSIGNMENT

  1. Explain the seven common phases of the Software Development Life Cycle.
  2. Draw a flowchart showing the Waterfall model.
  3. State three advantages and three disadvantages of Agile development.
  4. A school wants to develop a CBT portal and expects to add features based on students' feedback. Recommend a development model and justify your answer.

7. TEACHER'S REFLECTION

After the lesson, the teacher should reflect on the following:

  • Were students able to define SDLC correctly?
  • Could students identify and explain the major phases?
  • Were students able to distinguish between Waterfall and Agile?
  • Could students apply the concepts to a practical software project?
  • Which areas require further explanation or revision?
