Leson Plan: Cloud Computing and Virtualization SS3
LESSON PLAN: CLOUD COMPUTING AND VIRTUALIZATION
| Subject | Digital Technologies |
| Class | SSS 3 |
| Term | First Term |
| Week | 8 |
| Topic | Cloud Computing and Virtualization |
| Duration | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
| Subtopics | Meaning of virtualization, virtual machines, hypervisors, cloud computing, remote servers, cloud service models, benefits and limitations. |
1. BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define virtualization and cloud computing.
- Explain virtual machines and state the functions of a hypervisor.
- Describe remote servers and identify their uses.
- Differentiate between virtualization and cloud computing.
- Identify and explain IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
- State the benefits and limitations of cloud computing and virtualization.
2. INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS
- Computer system or laptop.
- Projector or display screen, where available.
- Internet connection, where available.
- Charts or diagrams showing a physical server, virtual machines and cloud services.
- Whiteboard and markers.
- Examples of cloud services, such as Google Drive and online document editors.
3. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Students have learned about computer systems, operating systems, computer networks and internet services. They may have used online storage, web-based email or shared online documents.
Entry questions:
- What is an operating system?
- What happens when you save a file to an online storage service?
- Can one physical computer run more than one operating system? Explain your answer.
4. PRESENTATION STEPS
| STEP | TEACHER'S ACTIVITY | STUDENTS' ACTIVITY |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Introduction 10 minutes |
Reviews previous lessons on operating systems and networking. Asks students how they access files stored online. Introduces cloud computing and virtualization. | Respond to questions and mention examples of online services they know. |
| Step 2: Virtualization 15 minutes |
Defines virtualization, explains virtual machines and describes the roles of physical hardware, guest operating systems and hypervisors. Explains Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisors. | Take notes, identify the components of a virtual machine and give examples of how virtualization can be used. |
| Step 3: Cloud Computing 15 minutes |
Explains cloud computing and discusses examples such as online storage, web-based email and online document editors. | Identify cloud services they have used or heard about and explain their purposes. |
| Step 4: Remote Servers 10 minutes |
Explains remote servers and how requests travel from users' devices to servers and back. Discusses website hosting, file storage and email services. | Describe how a remote server responds when a user requests an online file or webpage. |
| Step 5: Service Models 10 minutes |
Explains IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, using appropriate examples. Highlights the relationship and differences between virtualization and cloud computing. | Differentiate between the three service models and explain how virtualization can support cloud services. |
| Step 6: Benefits and Limitations 10 minutes |
Discusses accessibility, scalability, collaboration, hardware efficiency, internet dependence, security risks and service interruptions. | List benefits and limitations and suggest ways to protect data stored online. |
| Step 7: Evaluation and Conclusion 10 minutes |
Asks oral and written questions, corrects misconceptions and summarises the main points of the lesson. | Answer evaluation questions, participate in the discussion and write down the assignment. |
5. EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- What is virtualization?
- Define a virtual machine and state three of its components.
- What is a hypervisor?
- Explain cloud computing and give three examples of cloud services.
- What is a remote server? State two uses.
- Differentiate between virtualization and cloud computing.
- Explain IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
- State three benefits and three limitations of cloud computing.
6. ASSIGNMENT
- Explain the difference between a physical computer and a virtual machine.
- Write short notes on IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, giving one example of each.
- State four precautions users should take when storing information in the cloud.
- Explain two reasons a school might use virtualization in its computer laboratory.
7. TEACHER'S REFLECTION
After the lesson, the teacher should reflect on the following:
- Were students able to explain cloud computing and virtualization correctly?
- Could students distinguish between a virtual machine and a remote server?
- Did students understand the differences between IaaS, PaaS and SaaS?
- Which concepts require further explanation or practical demonstration?
- What improvements should be made in the next lesson?
