Introduction to Robotics - JSS 2 Digital Technologies

INTRODUCTION TO ROBOTICS

Subject: Digital Technologies

Class: JSS 2

Term: Third Term

Week: 1

Topic: Introduction to Robotics

Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of robotics.
  2. Identify different types of robots.
  3. Identify the basic components of a robot.
  4. State the uses of robots.

1. Meaning of Robots and Robotics

A robot is a machine that can sense its surroundings, process information and carry out tasks automatically or with little human help.
Robotics is the branch of technology that deals with the design, building, programming and use of robots.

Robots are built to help people perform tasks that are repetitive, difficult, dangerous or require great accuracy. A robot does not need to look like a human being. Many robots look like arms, vehicles, flying machines or small moving boxes.

Example

A robotic arm in a factory repeats the same movement many times to lift and place items on a production line. It does so without getting tired and with great accuracy.

Note: Not every machine is a robot. A machine is usually called a robot when it can sense something about its environment, follow instructions and act on them. An ordinary electric fan, for example, only does what its switch tells it to do.

2. Types of Robots

Robots can be grouped according to the work they do and the way they are built.

Type of Robot Description Example
Industrial Robots Robots used in factories and workshops to assemble, weld, paint, lift or pack items. A robotic arm on a car assembly line.
Mobile Robots Robots that can move from one place to another using wheels, tracks, legs or propellers. A warehouse delivery robot.
Humanoid Robots Robots built to look or move like human beings, usually with a head, arms and legs. A robot that can walk, wave and speak.
Service Robots Robots that help people with everyday tasks at home or in public places. A robotic vacuum cleaner.
Medical Robots Robots that assist doctors and hospital workers with treatment and care. A robot that helps a surgeon perform an operation.
Educational Robots Simple robots used to teach students about robotics, programming and problem solving. A small programmable robot kit used in a school.

3. Components of a Robot

Most robots are made up of the following basic components:

Component Function Example
Body / Frame Gives the robot its shape and holds all its parts together. Metal or plastic frame, robotic arm structure.
Power Supply Provides the energy that the robot needs to work. Battery, power adapter.
Sensors Collect information from the robot's surroundings. Camera, touch sensor, distance sensor.
Controller Receives information, makes decisions and sends instructions to other parts. It acts like the robot's brain. Microcontroller, small computer.
Actuators Parts that produce movement or action when instructed by the controller. Motors, robotic arms, wheels.
How the parts work together: Sensors collect information, the controller processes it and decides what to do, and the actuators carry out the action. The power supply keeps all of them working.
Sensor  -->  Controller  -->  Actuator
(detects) (decides) (acts)

These components, and the software that gives a robot its instructions, will be studied in more detail in the next lesson.

4. Uses of Robots

Robots are used in many areas of life. Some of the common uses are:

  1. Manufacturing: Robots assemble, weld, paint and pack products quickly and accurately.
  2. Medicine and healthcare: Robots assist in surgery, move medical supplies and help care for patients.
  3. Homes: Robots clean floors, mow lawns and perform other household tasks.
  4. Agriculture: Robots help to plant, water, monitor crops and harvest produce.
  5. Education: Robots help students learn about technology, programming and problem solving.
  6. Exploration: Robots explore places that are difficult or unsafe for people, such as outer space, deep oceans and caves.
  7. Dangerous tasks: Robots handle hazardous materials, work in extreme heat or help in rescue operations, reducing risk to human life.
  8. Transport and delivery: Robots move goods in warehouses and deliver items.
Remember: Robots are tools designed to help people. They are controlled through instructions given by humans.

5. Class Activity: Identify the Robot

Objective: Students will identify types, components and uses of robots from pictures or videos.
  1. Observe the pictures or videos of robots shown by the teacher.
  2. For each robot, write down the type of robot it is.
  3. Identify at least three components of the robot (for example, sensors, motors or a frame).
  4. State what the robot is used for.
  5. Record your answers in a table like the one below.
