INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN

Subject: Digital Technologies
Class: JSS 1 (Basic 7)
Term: Third Term
Week: 6
Topic: Introduction to Graphic Design
Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of graphic design.
  • State the importance of graphic design.
  • Identify colour, shape and typography as elements of design.
  • Explain how colour, shape and typography are used in designs.
  • Recognise these elements in posters, flyers, logos and other designs.

2. Introduction

We see different designs around us every day. Examples include school posters, book covers, product labels, advertisements, birthday cards, logos and event flyers. These designs use pictures, colours, shapes and written words to communicate messages to people.

For example, a school can create a colourful poster to announce an upcoming cultural day. The poster may contain the name of the school, the date of the event, pictures and attractive lettering. The arrangement of these elements helps people understand the message quickly.

This process of communicating messages through visual elements is an important part of graphic design.

3. Meaning of Graphic Design

Graphic design is the process of arranging visual elements such as colours, shapes, pictures and text to communicate information, ideas or messages.

Graphic design can be done manually using paper, pencils, markers and other drawing materials. It can also be done digitally with computers, tablets and graphic design applications.

A person who creates graphic designs is called a graphic designer.

Examples of Graphic Design

  • Posters: Used to announce events or share information.
  • Flyers: Used to promote products, services or activities.
  • Logos: Symbols or designs that identify an organisation, business or product.
  • Book covers: Designs that introduce and identify books.
  • Greeting cards: Designs used to communicate wishes or celebrate special occasions.
  • Advertisements: Designs used to attract attention to products, services or events.

4. Importance of Graphic Design

Graphic design is important for the following reasons:

  1. Communication: It helps people communicate messages through images, colours and text.
  2. Attracting attention: An attractive design can make people notice important information.
  3. Education: Charts, diagrams, posters and illustrations help explain ideas and topics.
  4. Advertising: Businesses use graphic design to promote products and services.
  5. Identification: Logos and other visual symbols help people recognise schools, organisations and businesses.
  6. Creativity: Graphic design allows people to express ideas and develop creative skills.
  7. Information sharing: Flyers, notices and infographics can present information in an organised way.
Remember: A good design should communicate its message clearly. A design does not have to contain many colours or pictures to be effective.

5. Elements of Graphic Design

Design elements are the basic visual components used to create a design. This lesson focuses on three important elements: colour, shape and typography.

A. Colour

Colour is a visual element that helps make a design attractive, communicate meaning and create a particular feeling or mood.

Colour can make a design noticeable and help distinguish one part of a design from another. Different colours may also be associated with different meanings depending on the context and culture.

Examples of Colours

RED
BLUE
GREEN
YELLOW
PURPLE

Uses of Colour in Graphic Design

  • To attract attention to important information.
  • To make a poster, flyer or card attractive.
  • To distinguish different sections of a design.
  • To communicate a mood or support the message being presented.
  • To help maintain a consistent appearance in an organisation's designs.

Choosing Colours

When selecting colours for a design, a designer should:

  • Choose colours that suit the purpose of the design.
  • Use colours that can be seen clearly against the background.
  • Avoid using too many competing colours.
  • Ensure that text remains easy to read.
Important: Very light text on a light background, or dark text on a very dark background, may be difficult to read. Good contrast helps people understand a design.

B. Shape

Shape is an enclosed two-dimensional area that has a particular outline, such as a circle, square, triangle or rectangle.

Shapes are used to organise information, create symbols, decorate designs and draw attention to particular areas. They may be drawn by hand or inserted into a digital design using a computer application.

Common Shapes Used in Graphic Design

Circle Square Triangle Rectangle

Examples of common shapes used in designs.

Uses of Shapes in Graphic Design

  • Circles: Can be used in badges, icons and logos.
  • Squares: Can be used to organise content or create simple designs.
  • Triangles: Can be used in symbols, patterns and directional designs.
  • Rectangles: Can be used for text boxes, banners, posters and buttons.

Shapes can also help divide a design into sections. For example, a rectangular box can be placed around the date and venue of a school event to make the information easy to find.

C. Typography

Typography is the art and technique of arranging written text so that it is clear, readable and visually appealing.

Typography involves selecting and arranging letters, words and sentences in a design. It includes choosing fonts, text sizes, styles, spacing and alignment.

Important Typography Terms

Term Meaning Example or Use
Font The design or style of letters and characters. Arial, Times New Roman and Verdana.
Font size How large or small the text appears. A large heading and smaller body text.
Bold A thicker version of text used for emphasis. IMPORTANT NOTICE
Italic Text that slants to the right in many typefaces. Special announcement
Alignment The way text is positioned in relation to an area. Left-aligned, centred or right-aligned text.
Spacing The gaps between letters, words or lines. Enough space between lines to improve readability.

Uses of Typography in Graphic Design

  • To make headings stand out from other text.
  • To make information easy to read.
  • To show the difference between titles, headings and body text.
  • To give a design an appropriate appearance.
  • To direct the reader's attention to important information.

Guidelines for Good Typography

  1. Use readable fonts.
  2. Make headings large enough to be noticed.
  3. Use suitable text sizes for different sections.
  4. Avoid using too many different fonts in one design.
  5. Ensure there is enough contrast between the text and background.
  6. Check spelling and grammar before sharing the design.

6. Combining Colour, Shape and Typography

A graphic designer often combines the three elements to create an effective design.

SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT

CULTURAL DAY

Celebrate Our Culture!

Date: Friday

Venue: School Assembly Ground

ALL ARE WELCOME

Illustration of how colours, shapes and typography can work together in a simple school announcement.

In the example above:

  • Colour: Blue, orange and green help distinguish the sections and attract attention.
  • Shape: Rounded boxes and borders organise the information.
  • Typography: The large heading makes the event name noticeable, while the smaller text provides details.
Key point: Good graphic design balances attractiveness with clarity. The purpose is not just to decorate information but to communicate it effectively.

7. Class Activity

Activity: Design a Simple School Event Poster

Students should work individually or in small groups to plan a poster announcing a school event, such as a quiz competition, cultural day or inter-house sports competition.

Each design should include:

  1. A suitable title for the event.
  2. At least three colours, used thoughtfully.
  3. At least two shapes, such as a circle and a rectangle.
  4. A clear heading and readable supporting text.
  5. Important information such as the date, venue or purpose of the event.

Students may use paper and coloured pencils or a digital design application if computers or suitable devices are available.

At the end of the activity, students should explain how they used colour, shape and typography in their designs.

8. Summary

  • Graphic design is the arrangement of visual elements to communicate messages and ideas.
  • Graphic design is used in posters, flyers, logos, book covers, advertisements and other materials.
  • It helps communicate information, attract attention, support education and promote products or events.
