LESSON PLAN
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER NETWORKS
| Subject | Digital Technologies |
| Class | JSS 1 (Basic 7) |
| Term | Second Term |
| Week | 6 |
| Topic | Introduction to Computer Networks |
| Duration | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
| Subtopics | Meaning of computer networks; reasons for networking; types of networks (LAN, MAN and WAN); network devices; advantages and disadvantages of networks; difference between a computer network and the Internet. |
1. BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define a computer network.
- State at least four reasons computers are connected in networks.
- Explain LAN, MAN and WAN with relevant examples.
- Identify common network devices and state their functions.
- State the advantages and disadvantages of computer networks.
- Differentiate between a computer network and the Internet.
2. INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS
- Desktop computer or laptop.
- Router and Ethernet cable, where available.
- Pictures of a network switch, modem and network interface card.
- Chart showing LAN, MAN and WAN.
- Whiteboard and markers.
3. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Students have learnt about basic computer communication, including wired and wireless communication and the Internet.
Teacher's entry questions:
- What is computer communication?
- How can two computers exchange files?
- Have you seen computers connected to the same printer or router?
4. PRESENTATION STEPS
| STEP / TIME | TEACHER'S ACTIVITY | STUDENTS' ACTIVITY |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Introduction 10 minutes |
Reviews computer communication and asks students how computers in a laboratory might share files and printers. Introduces the meaning of a computer network. | Answer questions and give examples of connected digital devices. |
| Step 2: Meaning and Reasons for Networking 15 minutes |
Defines a computer network and explains resource sharing, communication, collaboration, and shared Internet access. | Take notes and mention reasons computers are connected in networks. |
| Step 3: Types of Networks 15 minutes |
Explains LAN, MAN and WAN using examples from a school, a city and different countries. | Identify each network type and match it with the appropriate coverage area. |
| Step 4: Network Devices 15 minutes |
Displays or describes a router, switch, modem, network interface card, network cable and wireless access point. Explains their functions. | Observe the devices or pictures and state the function of each device. |
| Step 5: Advantages and Disadvantages 15 minutes |
Discusses resource sharing, faster communication, cost savings, security risks, equipment failure and maintenance. Explains the difference between a network and the Internet. | List advantages and disadvantages and explain the difference between a local network and the Internet. |
| Step 6: Evaluation and Conclusion 10 minutes |
Asks oral questions, corrects misconceptions, summarises the lesson and gives an assignment. | Answer questions, summarise key points and copy the assignment. |
Total Duration: 80 Minutes
5. EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- What is a computer network?
- Mention four reasons for connecting computers in a network.
- Explain LAN, MAN and WAN.
- State the functions of a router and a network switch.
- Mention three advantages and two disadvantages of computer networks.
- Differentiate between a computer network and the Internet.
6. ASSIGNMENT
- Define a computer network and state five reasons for using one.
- Explain LAN, MAN and WAN, giving one example of each.
- State the functions of a router, switch, modem and network interface card.
- List four advantages and three disadvantages of computer networks.
- Draw a simple school computer network showing computers connected to a switch and a router.
7. TEACHER'S REFLECTION
After the lesson, the teacher should reflect on the following:
- Were students able to define a computer network?
- Could they correctly distinguish LAN, MAN and WAN?
- Were students able to identify network devices and explain their functions?
- Which areas require further explanation or revision?
