Subject: Digital Technologies
Class: JSS 1 (Basic 7)
Term: Third Term
Week: 8
Topic: Introduction to Canva
Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Explain what Canva is and state its uses.
  • Describe the basic steps for getting started with Canva.
  • Identify common design types that can be created with Canva.
  • Explain how to create and edit a design.
  • Describe templates and explain how to customize them.
  • Create or plan a simple design using suitable text, colours, shapes and images.

2. Introduction

In the previous lesson, we learned that graphic design involves arranging colours, shapes, pictures and text to communicate messages. Graphic designs can be created with paper and drawing materials or with digital tools.

Digital design applications make it easier to create posters, flyers, invitations, presentations and other visual materials. One such application is Canva. It provides tools and ready-made designs that users can adapt to suit their needs.

For example, a student can use Canva to prepare a poster announcing a school debate competition or to create a presentation for a classroom project.

3. Meaning of Canva

Canva is an online graphic design platform that allows users to create and edit visual materials such as posters, flyers, presentations, invitations and social media graphics.

Canva provides design tools, templates, text styles, shapes, images and other elements that users can arrange to produce their own designs. It is designed to make graphic design accessible to beginners as well as experienced users.

Examples of Designs Created with Canva

  • School event posters and announcements.
  • Flyers for programmes and activities.
  • Presentation slides for classroom lessons.
  • Birthday cards and invitations.
  • Certificates and simple educational materials.
  • Social media graphics and banners.

4. Getting Started with Canva

Canva can be accessed through a web browser on a computer or through its mobile application on a supported smartphone or tablet. An internet connection is generally needed to access the online platform and its resources.

Basic Steps for Getting Started

  1. Open Canva: Open a web browser and visit www.canva.com, or open the Canva application if it is installed on your device.
  2. Sign up or log in: Create an account or sign in using an available supported method. Follow any instructions shown on the screen.
  3. Choose a design type: Select the kind of design you want to create, such as a poster, flyer or presentation.
  4. Select a starting point: Choose a suitable template or start with a blank design if that option is available.
  5. Open the editor: The design editor provides tools for adding and changing text, colours, shapes, images and other elements.
  6. Begin designing: Add the information and visual elements needed for your project.
Note: Canva's interface and available features may change over time. Some templates, images and tools may require a paid plan. Students should use features available to them and follow their school's instructions.

5. Creating a Design in Canva

Creating a design means starting a new project and arranging the elements needed to communicate a message.

Steps in Creating a Simple Poster

  1. Decide the purpose of the poster and the audience it is intended for.
  2. Choose the poster design type or a suitable template.
  3. Add a clear heading that communicates the main message.
  4. Insert supporting text such as the date, venue and time of an event.
  5. Add suitable colours, shapes, illustrations or images.
  6. Arrange the elements so that the poster is clear and attractive.
  7. Review the design for spelling mistakes and missing information.
  8. Save the project and use an available download or sharing option when ready.

Example: School Debate Poster

SCHOOL EVENT

DEBATE COMPETITION

Speak with Confidence!

Date: Friday

Venue: School Hall

COME AND SUPPORT

This is an illustrative poster layout. A similar design can be created using Canva's text, shape and colour tools.

6. Editing Designs in Canva

Editing means making changes to a design to improve its appearance, correct errors or update its information.

After choosing a template or creating a new design, users can edit its elements to suit their needs.

Common Editing Activities

Editing Activity Explanation Example
Changing text Replacing existing words with new information. Changing a sample heading to the name of a school event.
Changing colours Selecting different colours for text, shapes or backgrounds. Using school colours in a poster.
Changing font and size Adjusting the appearance and size of text. Making the event title larger than the other text.
Adding images Inserting suitable pictures or illustrations. Adding a relevant illustration to a school flyer.
Moving and resizing Changing the position or dimensions of an element. Moving the date below the heading.
Deleting elements Removing items that are not needed. Deleting an unused decorative shape.

Why Editing Is Important

  • It allows the design to match the user's purpose.
  • It helps correct spelling and other errors.
  • It improves the arrangement of visual elements.
  • It makes information more readable and relevant.
  • It allows users to replace sample information with their own.

7. Templates in Canva

A template is a pre-designed layout that can be used as a starting point for creating a design.

Canva provides templates for different purposes. A template may already contain headings, text areas, colours, shapes, pictures and other design elements. The user can change these elements to create a design suitable for a particular task.

Examples of Template Types

  • Poster templates.
  • Flyer templates.
  • Presentation templates.
  • Invitation templates.
  • Certificate templates.
  • Social media templates.

Advantages of Templates

  1. Save time: Users do not always need to begin from a blank page.
  2. Provide guidance: Templates demonstrate how elements can be arranged.
  3. Support beginners: They help new users learn basic design arrangements.
  4. Encourage consistency: Templates can help maintain a similar appearance across related materials.
  5. Allow customization: Users can adapt the design to meet their needs.
Remember: A template is a starting point, not necessarily a finished design. Always replace sample text with correct information and review the final design before sharing it.

8. Customization in Canva

Customization is the process of changing a template or design to suit a user's particular purpose, preferences or requirements.

Customization helps users make a design more relevant to their event, organisation, school project or intended audience.

Ways to Customize a Template

  • Replace the sample heading and text with your own information.
  • Change colours to suit the subject or occasion.
  • Choose suitable fonts and text sizes.
  • Add or remove shapes, pictures and decorative elements.
  • Move elements to improve the layout.
  • Update dates, names, locations and other details.
  • Remove unnecessary elements that make the design crowded.

Example of Customization

A student chooses a birthday invitation template. To customize it, the student changes the sample name, adds the birthday date and venue, selects suitable colours and replaces an unsuitable picture with a more appropriate one.

The student has used the template as a starting point but modified it to meet a specific need.

9. Saving, Downloading and Sharing Designs

After completing a design, users may need to keep a copy or share it with others.

  • Saving: Keep the project so it can be accessed or edited later. Online projects may save changes automatically, depending on the platform and connection.
  • Downloading: Export a copy of the design in a format offered by Canva, such as PNG, JPG or PDF, depending on the design and available options.
  • Sharing: Use available sharing features to let other people view or work on a design, depending on the permissions selected.
Responsible use: Use images and other materials that you have permission to use. Check the accuracy of your information before sharing a design, and do not publish another person's private information without permission.

10. Class Activity

Activity: Create a Simple School Event Design

Students should create or plan a poster announcing one of the following:

  • A school debate competition.
  • A cultural day celebration.
  • An inter-house sports competition.
  • A school quiz competition.

Instructions

  1. Choose a suitable poster template in Canva, if available, or begin with a blank design.
  2. Write a clear title for the event.
  3. Add the date and venue, using sample details if the actual information is not yet known.
  4. Use suitable colours, shapes and readable text.
  5. Customize the design to suit the selected event.
  6. Check the spelling and arrangement of the elements.
  7. Present the design to the class and explain the changes made.

Alternative for schools without internet access: Students can draw a sample poster on paper and identify the template, editing and customization steps they would use in Canva.
