LESSON PLAN

Lesson Information

Subject Digital Technologies
Class SSS 1
Term Second Term
Week 4
Topic Digital Storage & Cloud Computing
Duration 80 Minutes (Double Period)
Date ________________________

Behavioural Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define digital storage and state its importance.
  2. Identify the units used to measure digital storage capacity.
  3. Identify magnetic, optical and solid-state storage devices and explain their uses.
  4. Differentiate between local, external and cloud storage.
  5. Define cloud computing and give examples of its applications.
  6. Explain the advantages and limitations of cloud computing.
  7. Define data backup and describe common backup methods.
  8. State safe practices for protecting stored information.

Previous Knowledge

Students have learned about computer networks and Internet technologies. They understand that computers process information and can communicate through networks.

Instructional Materials

  • Computer system or laptop.
  • USB flash drive, external hard drive or SSD, if available.
  • CD or DVD, if available.
  • Pictures or charts showing storage devices.
  • Internet-connected device for demonstrating cloud storage, where available.
  • Whiteboard and markers.

Teaching Methods

Discussion, explanation, demonstration, questioning, guided observation and practical activities.

Lesson Presentation

Time Teacher's Activities Students' Activities
5 minutes Introduces the lesson by asking students where they save their school assignments, pictures and videos. Connects their responses to digital storage. Respond to questions and mention familiar storage devices and services.
10 minutes Explains digital storage, its importance and common storage units such as bytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. Define digital storage, list its uses and identify storage units.
15 minutes Explains magnetic, optical and solid-state storage. Shows available devices or pictures and discusses their uses, advantages and limitations. Observe the devices, classify them and state examples and uses of each storage type.
10 minutes Explains local, external and cloud storage and guides students through a comparison of where files are stored and how they are accessed. Compare the three storage methods and give examples of each.
15 minutes Defines cloud computing, gives examples of cloud services and discusses its advantages, limitations and security considerations. Give examples of cloud computing, identify its benefits and explain possible risks.
10 minutes Explains data backup, common backup methods and full, incremental and differential backups. Discusses safe backup practices. Explain the importance of backups and suggest a suitable backup plan for schoolwork.
15 minutes Asks evaluation questions, corrects misconceptions, summarises the lesson and gives the assignment. Answer questions, participate in the summary and write down the assignment.

Evaluation

The teacher asks students the following questions to assess their understanding:

  1. What is digital storage?
  2. State three types of digital storage technology and give one example of each.
  3. Differentiate between local storage, external storage and cloud storage.
  4. What is cloud computing? Mention two examples.
  5. State two advantages and two limitations of cloud storage.
  6. What is data backup, and why is it important?
  7. Mention four practices that help protect digital files.

Assignment

  1. Draw or paste pictures of four digital storage devices and state one use of each.
  2. Explain five differences or comparisons between local storage and cloud storage.
  3. Describe a backup plan for protecting your school assignments.
