Difference Between AI and Robotics - JSS 2 Note
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AI AND ROBOTICS
Subject: Digital Technologies
Class: JSS 2
Term: Third Term
Week: 6
Topic: Difference Between AI and Robotics
Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Distinguish between AI and robotics.
- Explain the interrelationship between AI and robotics.
- Identify examples of AI and robotics such as drones and chatbots.
1. Recall: Robotics and AI
AI and robotics are closely related, and many people confuse them. In this lesson, we study how they are different and how they work together.
2. Difference Between AI and Robotics
| Point | Artificial Intelligence (AI) | Robotics |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Making computers and machines able to learn, reason and make decisions. | Designing, building and using robots to perform physical tasks. |
| Nature | Mostly software: programs and data. | Mostly hardware and software together: a physical machine with a program. |
| Physical body | Does not need a physical body. It can exist only as a program. | Needs a physical body that can move or act in the real world. |
| Main purpose | To think, learn, understand and decide. | To perform physical tasks such as moving, lifting and assembling. |
| Main parts | Data, programs and models that learn from data. | Frame, sensors, controller, actuators and power supply. |
| Examples | Chatbots, voice assistants, spam filters. | Robotic arms, robot vacuums, drones. |
3. Interrelationship Between AI and Robotics
AI and robotics are different fields, but they can be combined. Each one can improve the other.
AI (the brain) + Robotics (the body) = Intelligent robot
How AI Helps Robotics
- It helps a robot recognise objects, faces and voices.
- It helps a robot make decisions on its own.
- It helps a robot find its way around obstacles.
- It helps a robot learn from experience and improve at its tasks.
How Robotics Helps AI
- It gives AI a physical body that can act in the real world.
- It provides sensors that collect real-world data for AI to use.
- It allows the decisions of AI to be carried out as movement or action.
AI and Robotics: Three Possibilities
| Possibility | Explanation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| AI without robotics | An intelligent program with no physical body. | A chatbot or voice assistant. |
| Robotics without AI | A robot that follows fixed instructions and does not learn. | A robotic arm that repeats the same movement. |
| AI and robotics together | A robot that uses AI to see, learn or decide. | A robot vacuum that maps a room, or a drone that avoids obstacles. |
4. Examples: Drones and Chatbots
Drones
A drone is a flying machine with propellers, sensors and a controller. It can be controlled from a distance or follow a programmed flight path. A drone is a type of robot because it is a physical machine that senses its surroundings and acts.
Many drones also use AI. For example, a drone may use AI to avoid obstacles, recognise objects or follow a person automatically.
Chatbots
A chatbot is a computer program that holds a conversation with a user in text or speech. Chatbots use AI to understand what the user says and to reply. A chatbot is an example of AI, but it is not a robot because it has no physical body.
Comparing a Drone and a Chatbot
| Point | Drone | Chatbot |
|---|---|---|
| Physical body | Yes: frame, propellers, sensors. | No: it is only a program. |
| Robotics? | Yes. It is a flying robot. | No. |
| AI? | Only in some drones, such as those that avoid obstacles or follow objects. | Yes. It uses AI to understand and reply. |
| What it does | Flies, records video, delivers items, inspects places. | Answers questions and chats with users. |
5. Class Activity: AI, Robotics or Both?
Copy the table below. Tick AI, Robotics or Both for each example.
| Example | AI | Robotics | Both |
|---|---|---|---|
| A chatbot on a school website | |||
| A robotic arm that repeats the same movement all day | |||
| A drone that follows a person and avoids trees by itself | |||
| A spam filter in an email program | |||
| A robot vacuum that learns the layout of a room |
Questions for the Activity
- Which examples have a physical body?
- Which example is AI but not robotics? Why?
- Which example is robotics but not AI? Why?
- Which examples combine AI and robotics?
6. Summary
- AI is about intelligence: learning, understanding and making decisions. Robotics is about building machines that perform physical tasks.
- AI can exist without a physical body, but a robot must have one.
- AI can make robots more intelligent, and robotics gives AI a body to act in the real world.
- A drone is a flying robot and may use AI to avoid obstacles or follow objects.
- A chatbot is an AI program with no physical body, so it is not a robot.
7. Evaluation Questions
- Define AI and robotics.
- State three differences between AI and robotics.
- Why can AI exist without a physical body?
- Can a robot work without AI? Explain.
- How does AI help robots?
- How does robotics help AI?
- Why is a drone a robot but a chatbot is not?
- Give one example of a machine that uses both AI and robotics.
8. Assignment
- Define AI and robotics and state three differences between them.
- Explain the relationship between AI and robotics.
- Describe a drone as an example of robotics and explain how AI can improve it.
- Describe a chatbot as an example of AI and explain why it is not a robot.
