Discussion, explanation, questioning, demonstration and guided practical activity.
Lesson Presentation
| Time | Teacher's Activities | Students' Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 5 minutes | Introduces the lesson by asking how a school keeps students' names, admission numbers and examination results organised. | Respond to questions and describe ways of keeping student information. |
| 10 minutes | Defines a database and explains its importance. Gives examples from schools, hospitals, banks, libraries and shops. | Define a database and identify examples of databases in everyday life. |
| 15 minutes | Explains a Database Management System (DBMS), gives examples such as Microsoft Access and MySQL, and describes its functions. | Explain the meaning and purpose of a DBMS and mention examples of database management systems. |
| 15 minutes | Displays a sample student database table. Explains tables, records and fields using the table's rows and columns. | Identify the table, individual records and fields in the sample database. |
| 15 minutes | Guides students in examining sample data. Introduces the primary key and demonstrates basic operations such as inserting, retrieving and updating records. | Identify a possible primary key and explain how database records can be added, found or updated. |
| 10 minutes | Organises a classroom activity in which students label the fields and records in a sample table. Corrects errors and reinforces the difference between a database and a DBMS. | Label the fields and records, answer questions and explain the difference between a database and a DBMS. |
| 10 minutes | Evaluates students through oral questions, reviews the main concepts and gives an assignment. | Answer evaluation questions and record the assignment. |
Total Duration: 80 Minutes
Evaluation
- Define a database.
- What is a Database Management System?
- Mention three examples of DBMS software.
- Differentiate between a table, a record and a field.
