| Duration | 80 Minutes |
1. Introduction
The Internet and digital devices have made communication, learning, entertainment and access to information easier. However, using computers, smartphones and online services also exposes users to different digital threats.
Cybersecurity helps users protect their devices, accounts, networks and personal information from unauthorised access, damage, theft and other online threats.
2. Meaning of Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is important for individuals, schools, businesses, government organisations and other institutions that use digital technology.
3. Importance of Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity helps users protect information and digital resources from different types of threats.
| Importance | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Protecting personal information | Cybersecurity helps protect information such as names, passwords, photographs and other personal details. |
| Protecting accounts | Security practices help prevent unauthorised people from gaining access to online accounts. |
| Protecting devices | Good security practices can help reduce the risk of malware and other threats affecting computers and mobile devices. |
| Preventing data loss | Security measures can help reduce the risk of important files being damaged, stolen or deleted. |
| Safe Internet use | Cybersecurity awareness helps users make safer decisions when browsing, communicating and using online services. |
4. Types of Cyberattacks
A cyberattack is an attempt to gain unauthorised access to a computer, account, network or information, or to disrupt or damage a digital system.
Some common types of cyberattacks include phishing, malware, password attacks, identity theft and social engineering.
4.1 Phishing
For example, a user may receive a message claiming to be from a familiar organisation and asking the user to click a link and provide a password.
4.2 Malware
Examples of malware include viruses, worms, spyware and ransomware.
4.3 Password Attacks
A password attack is an attempt to obtain or guess a person's password in order to gain access to an account or system.
Using weak or easily guessed passwords can make accounts more vulnerable.
4.4 Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when someone obtains and uses another person's personal information without permission, often to impersonate that person or gain access to services.
4.5 Social Engineering
Social engineering involves manipulating or deceiving people into revealing information or performing actions that may compromise their security.
5. Warning Signs of a Suspicious Message
Students should learn to recognise signs that an email, text message or online request may be suspicious.
- Unexpected messages asking for personal information.
- Requests for passwords or security codes.
- Links leading to unfamiliar websites.
- Messages creating unnecessary urgency or pressure.
- Unexpected attachments.
- Unusual sender addresses or account names.
- Messages claiming that a prize or reward has been won unexpectedly.
6. Safe Online Habits
Safe online habits help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of cyberattacks. Students should practise these habits whenever they use computers, smartphones or Internet services.
| Safe Habit | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Use strong passwords | Use passwords that are difficult for other people to guess and avoid using the same password everywhere. |
| Keep passwords private | Do not share passwords with friends or strangers. |
| Be careful with links | Avoid clicking suspicious or unexpected links. |
| Keep software updated | Updates can provide important security improvements and fixes. |
| Use secure websites | Be careful when entering personal information on websites and check that the website is appropriate and trustworthy. |
| Sign out of shared computers | Always sign out of online accounts when using a public or shared device. |
| Protect personal information | Avoid unnecessarily posting sensitive personal information online. |
7. Strong Passwords
A strong password makes it more difficult for unauthorised people to gain access to an account.
Good Password Practices
- Use a sufficiently long password or passphrase.
- Use a mixture of different types of characters where appropriate.
- Avoid easily guessed information such as your name or birthday.
- Do not use the same password for every important account.
- Never share your password with strangers.
8. Protecting Personal Information
Personal information includes details that can identify or provide information about a person. Examples include a person's full name, address, phone number, account details, photographs and passwords.
Students should think carefully before sharing personal information online. Information posted publicly may be copied, saved or shared by other people.
9. What to Do When You Suspect an Attack
- Stop interacting with the suspicious message, website or file.
- Do not provide passwords or other sensitive information.
- Close the suspicious page or message.
- Tell a trusted adult, teacher, parent or responsible authority.
- Change a password if an account may have been compromised.
- Use appropriate security tools or account recovery procedures when necessary.
10. Class Activity
Activity:
- Teacher presents three simple online messages to the class.
- Students identify which messages appear suspicious.
- Students identify the warning signs in each suspicious message.
- Students explain what they should do instead of clicking suspicious links.
- Students list five safe online habits.
11. Summary
- Cybersecurity involves protecting digital devices, systems, accounts and information.
