Duration80 Minutes (Double Period)
Date/Period________________________

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of conditional statements.
  2. Identify IF and ELSE statements in programming.
  3. Explain how conditions help programs make decisions.
  4. Give examples of conditions in everyday life.
  5. Use Scratch conditional blocks to create a simple program that responds to a condition.

2. Previous Knowledge

Students have learnt basic programming concepts using Scratch, including block coding and variables. They have practised arranging programming blocks to control sprites and create simple programs.

3. Instructional Materials

  • Computers or laptops.
  • Scratch programming environment.
  • Flowcharts and sample conditional programs.
  • Projector or display screen.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Prepared coding exercises.

4. Reference Materials

  • Digital Technologies lesson note on Control with Conditions.
  • Scratch interface and built-in help resources.
  • Teacher-prepared flowcharts and conditional programming examples.

5. Lesson Presentation

Stage/Time Teacher's Activities Students' Activities
Stage 1: Introduction
5 minutes
Asks students to give examples of everyday decisions, such as carrying an umbrella if it rains or answering a question correctly. Connects these examples to computer programming. Respond to questions and give examples of decisions based on conditions.
Stage 2: Meaning of Conditions
10 minutes
Defines conditional statements and explains that conditions are tested as true or false. Gives examples involving scores, correct answers and sprite movement. Listen, take notes and identify conditions in the examples given.
Stage 3: IF and IF-ELSE Statements
15 minutes
Explains the IF statement and IF-ELSE statement. Uses pseudocode examples to show the actions performed when conditions are true or false. Compare the two statements, answer questions and suggest suitable examples.
Stage 4: Conditional Blocks in Scratch
15 minutes
Demonstrates the IF and IF-ELSE blocks in Scratch's Control category. Shows how to insert a condition from the Sensing category. Observe the demonstration and identify the relevant Control and Sensing blocks.
Stage 5: Practical Activity
25 minutes
Guides students to create a Scratch program that checks whether a sprite is touching the mouse pointer and displays different messages using an IF-ELSE block. Build the program, run it and observe how the sprite responds when the mouse pointer touches or moves away from it.
Stage 6: Evaluation and Conclusion
10 minutes
Asks evaluation questions, corrects errors and summarises the uses of conditional statements in programming. Answer questions and explain the difference between IF and IF-ELSE statements.

Total Duration: 80 Minutes

6. Evaluation

  1. What is a conditional statement?
  2. What is a condition in programming?
  3. Explain the function of an IF statement.
  4. Differentiate between IF and IF-ELSE statements.
  5. In which Scratch category can you find the IF and IF-ELSE blocks?
  6. Give two examples of situations where conditional statements can be used.
  7. Describe a simple Scratch program that responds when a sprite touches the mouse pointer.

7. Assignment

  1. Define conditional statements in programming.
  2. Explain two differences between IF and IF-ELSE statements.
  3. Write pseudocode for a program that displays “Pass” if a student's score is 50 or above and “Fail” otherwise.
  4. Describe how conditional statements can be used in a computer game.

8. Teacher's Reflection

Were students able to explain conditional statements, distinguish between IF and IF-ELSE, and use Scratch conditional blocks correctly? Identify students who require additional practical guidance.
