Subject Digital Technologies
Class JSS 1 (Basic 7)
Term Third Term
Week 10
Topic Computer Waste Management
Duration 80 Minutes (Double Period)
Content/Subtopics Meaning of e-waste; safe disposal methods; recycling practices.

1. BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define computer waste management and electronic waste (e-waste).
  2. Identify common examples of computer and electronic waste.
  3. Explain the dangers of improper e-waste disposal.
  4. Describe safe methods of disposing of unwanted electronic equipment.
  5. Explain the meaning and importance of recycling electronic waste.
  6. Describe the basic stages of electronic waste recycling.
  7. Explain the 3Rs of waste management: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

2. INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

  • Pictures of old computers, monitors, keyboards, printers and mobile phones.
  • Chart showing examples of electronic waste.
  • Chart illustrating Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • Computer components or accessories that are safe to demonstrate.
  • Pictures or diagrams showing electronic waste collection and recycling.

3. PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students are familiar with computers, mobile phones and other electronic devices. They may have seen damaged or outdated electronic equipment at home, in school or in offices.

Teacher's entry questions:

  1. What happens when a computer or phone stops working?
  2. Have you seen old or damaged electronic devices thrown away?
  3. Why should we avoid throwing rubbish into drains or burning it indiscriminately?

The teacher uses students' responses to introduce computer waste management and the need for safe disposal and recycling.

4. PRESENTATION STEPS

STEP / TIME TEACHER'S ACTIVITY STUDENTS' ACTIVITY
Step 1: Introduction
5 minutes
The teacher asks students what happens to damaged or unwanted electronic devices and introduces the topic, Computer Waste Management. Students share their experiences with old or damaged computers and other electronic devices.
Step 2: Meaning and Examples of E-Waste
12 minutes
The teacher defines computer waste management and e-waste. The teacher explains examples such as damaged computers, monitors, printers, phones, batteries and cables. Students define e-waste, identify examples and classify items shown in pictures.
Step 3: Dangers of Improper Disposal
10 minutes
The teacher explains environmental pollution, harmful smoke from burning electronics, possible health risks, blocked drainage and the loss of recoverable materials. Students discuss the effects of dumping or burning electronic waste and suggest safer alternatives.
Step 4: Safe Disposal Methods
15 minutes
The teacher explains suitable collection points, authorised recycling services, repair, responsible donation, safe battery handling and the need to protect personal data before handing over devices. Students identify safe disposal methods and explain how to handle unwanted electronic equipment responsibly.
Step 5: Recycling Practices
12 minutes
The teacher defines recycling and explains collection, sorting, assessment, safe dismantling by trained personnel, material recovery and appropriate treatment of hazardous components. Students describe the basic recycling process and state the benefits of recycling electronic waste.
Step 6: The 3Rs
8 minutes
The teacher explains Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and gives computer-related examples of each principle. Students give examples of how the 3Rs can be applied to computers and electronic accessories.
Step 7: Class Activity and Evaluation
13 minutes
The teacher presents pictures of electronic items and asks groups to suggest safe ways to repair, reuse, recycle or dispose of them. The teacher asks evaluation questions. Students classify the items, suggest safe management methods and answer the evaluation questions.
Step 8: Summary and Assignment
5 minutes
The teacher summarises the main points, reinforces safety precautions and gives the assignment. Students state important lessons learned and write down the assignment.

Total Duration: 80 Minutes

5. EVALUATION QUESTIONS

  1. What is computer waste management?
  2. Define e-waste and list five examples.
  3. State four dangers of improper electronic waste disposal.
  4. Explain four safe methods of managing unwanted electronic equipment.
  5. What is recycling, and why is it important?
  6. List four stages in electronic waste recycling.
  7. Explain the 3Rs of waste management with examples.

6. ASSIGNMENT

  1. List eight examples of electronic waste found in homes, schools or offices.
  2. Explain five dangers of improper electronic waste disposal.
  3. Describe five safe practices for disposing of or recycling unwanted computer equipment.
  4. Explain Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, giving one computer-related example of each.

7. TEACHER'S REFLECTION

After the lesson, the teacher should reflect on the following:

  • Were students able to define e-waste and identify common examples?
  • Could students explain safe disposal methods and recycling practices?
  • Did students understand the importance of the 3Rs?
  • Which concepts require further explanation or practical demonstration?
