LESSON PLAN

SubjectDigital Technologies
ClassSSS 2
TermSecond Term
Week2
TopicComputer Programming II
SubtopicsIntroduction to Python and JavaScript; their features and uses; programming environments and code editors; writing and running simple programs.
Duration80 Minutes (Double Period)
Date________________________

Behavioural Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the uses of Python and JavaScript.
  2. Identify basic programming environments and code editors.
  3. State basic features of Python and JavaScript.
  4. Write and execute simple programs using either language where facilities are available.

Instructional Materials

  • Computer systems or laptops
  • Python and JavaScript code examples
  • Suitable programming environments or online editors
  • Projector, where available
  • Whiteboard and markers

Previous Knowledge

Students have studied algorithms and flowcharts and understand that a problem can be solved through a sequence of logical steps.

Teaching Methods

Explanation, demonstration, questioning, discussion and practical exercises.

Presentation Steps

Time Stage Teacher's Activities Students' Activities
5 mins Introduction Reviews algorithms and flowcharts. Explains that programming languages help translate planned solutions into executable instructions. Recall the previous lesson and answer introductory questions.
10 mins Programming Languages Defines a programming language and introduces Python and JavaScript with examples of their uses. Define a programming language and identify Python and JavaScript as examples.
15 mins Python Explains Python's features and uses. Demonstrates print("Hello") and explains the expected output. Identify Python's features and uses, copy the example and state what it displays.
15 mins JavaScript Explains JavaScript's features and uses in web development. Demonstrates console.log("Hello");. Identify JavaScript's uses and explain the purpose of the sample statement.
10 mins Programming Environments and Code Editors Explains the purpose of a programming environment and code editor. Demonstrates how a student can open an editor and prepare a simple program. Identify the editor or environment shown and explain its purpose.
15 mins Practical Demonstration Guides students to write and run a simple Python or JavaScript program, where computers and suitable software are available. Explains basic syntax errors. Write or copy the program, run it where possible, observe the output and correct simple mistakes.
5 mins Evaluation and Conclusion Asks oral questions, reviews the main points and corrects misconceptions. Answer questions and summarise the uses of Python and JavaScript.
5 mins Assignment Gives the assignment and explains what students should submit. Record the assignment and ask questions if necessary.
Total 80 minutes

Evaluation Questions

  1. What is a programming language?
  2. State three uses of Python.
  3. State three uses of JavaScript.
  4. What is the purpose of a code editor?
  5. Write a simple Python statement that displays a message.

Assignment

  1. Write four features or uses of Python and four of JavaScript.
  2. Write a Python statement that displays your name.
  3. Write a JavaScript statement that displays the message "I am learning programming."
  4. Explain the purpose of a programming environment or code editor.
