Classification of Feed Ingredients JS 1 Note

JSS 1 LIVESTOCK FARMING LESSON NOTE

FIRST TERM | WEEK 10: CLASSIFICATION OF FEED INGREDIENTS

1. Meaning of Animal Feed and Feedstuff

Animal Feed: Any food substance given to farm animals to supply nutrients for growth, reproduction, milk/egg production, work, and maintenance of health.

Feedstuff (Feed Ingredient): Any single raw ingredient or nutrient source used in mixing and preparing complete animal feeds (e.g., maize, soybean meal, salt).

Key Concept:
A single ingredient (like maize) is a feedstuff. A combination of balanced feedstuffs mixed together (like Layer Mash or Starter Broiler Feed) is a complete animal feed.

2. Classification of Feedstuffs

Livestock feed ingredients are grouped into four major categories based on their primary chemical composition and nutritional function:

Class Main Characteristics & Functions Common Examples
1. Carbohydrates / Energy Feeds (Basal Feeds) • High in energy, low in protein (<18%).
• Highly digestible.
• Provides energy for movement, digestion, and heat production.
Maize, Guinea corn (Sorghum), Wheat offal, Cassava peel meal, Rice bran, Millet.
2. Protein Supplements • High protein content (>20%).
• Essential for growth, tissue repair, muscle formation, and egg/milk synthesis.
Plant Proteins: Groundnut cake (GNC), Soybean meal, Cottonseed cake.
Animal Proteins: Fish meal, Blood meal, Feather meal.
3. Roughages • High in crude fiber (>18%), low in digestible nutrients.
• Essential for ruminant digestion (Cattle, Sheep, Goats).
Fresh grasses (Elephant grass, Guinea grass), Leguminous legumes (Centrosema, Stylo), Hay, Silage, Crop residues (Maize stover).
4. Mineral & Vitamin Supplements • Required in small quantities.
• Crucial for strong bones, shell formation, metabolic reactions, and disease resistance.
Minerals: Bone meal, Oyster shell meal, Dicalcium phosphate (DCP), Common salt (NaCl).
Vitamins: Vitamin premix, Fish liver oil, Synthetic vitamin additives.

3. Importance of Feed Ingredients in Livestock Production

  • Energy Feeds: Keep animals active and maintain body temperature.
  • Protein Ingredients: Build muscles and produce animal products like meat, eggs, and milk.
  • Roughages: Prevent digestive disorders in ruminants by promoting chewing and cud-rumination.
  • Minerals and Vitamins: Prevent deficiency diseases (e.g., weak legs, soft-shelled eggs) and boost immunity.

CLASS EVALUATION & REVISION QUESTIONS

  1. Differentiate between an energy feedstuff and a protein supplement.
  2. Identify two animal-source protein ingredients and two plant-source protein ingredients.
  3. Why are roughages particularly important for ruminant animals like cows and goats?
  4. Mention two feed ingredients that supply calcium to laying birds.
HOME ASSIGNMENT:
Visit a nearby poultry farm or feed mill (or collect items around your environment) and bring samples of three different feedstuffs to class next week, clearly labeled with their names and nutrient categories.
