1. Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Define blockchain technology.
- Explain the basic concept and operation of blockchain.
- Describe the relationship between blockchain and cryptocurrency.
- Identify uses of blockchain beyond finance.
- Explain the advantages and challenges of blockchain technology.
2. Previous Knowledge
Students have prior knowledge of digital technologies, computer systems and digital information storage. They may also have heard of online transactions or cryptocurrencies.
3. Instructional Materials
- Computer or laptop, where available.
- Whiteboard and markers.
- Chart or diagram showing linked blocks.
- Prepared paper cards representing blockchain blocks.
- CMPNOTE lesson note on Blockchain Technology.
4. Teaching Methods
Discussion, explanation, demonstration, questioning and group activity.
5. Lesson Presentation
| Time | Teacher's Activities | Students' Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 10 mins | Introduction: Revises digital record-keeping and asks students how organisations store and share information. Introduces blockchain as another way of recording information. | Respond to questions and share examples of digital records and online transactions they know. |
| 15 mins | Meaning and Basic Concept: Defines blockchain and explains blocks, chains, distributed ledgers, cryptographic hashes and the basic process of adding records. | Listen, take notes, identify the parts of a blockchain and explain how blocks are linked. |
| 12 mins | Blockchain and Cryptocurrency: Explains the relationship between blockchain and cryptocurrency using Bitcoin as an example. Emphasises that blockchain has uses beyond digital currencies. | Differentiate between blockchain technology and cryptocurrency and give relevant examples. |
| 15 mins | Uses Beyond Finance: Discusses supply chain tracking, certificate verification, digital identity, selected healthcare records, smart contracts and record verification. | Identify possible applications and explain how blockchain might support record-keeping in each example. |
| 12 mins | Advantages and Challenges: Explains traceability, shared records and tamper resistance, alongside privacy concerns, cost, scalability and technical complexity. | Mention advantages and challenges and discuss why blockchain is not suitable for every problem. |
| 10 mins | Practical Activity: Guides students to arrange paper cards into a sequence of three linked blocks and discuss what happens if an earlier record changes. | Arrange the cards, label the blocks, demonstrate their sequence and explain the importance of linking records. |
| 6 mins | Evaluation and Conclusion: Asks oral questions, corrects misunderstandings and summarises the key points of the lesson. | Answer questions, state key points and identify one possible use of blockchain beyond finance. |
| Total: 80 Minutes | ||
6. Evaluation
The teacher asks students the following questions:
- What is blockchain technology?
- What is the difference between a block and a chain?
- How is blockchain related to cryptocurrency?
- Mention four uses of blockchain beyond finance.
- State three advantages and three challenges of blockchain.
7. Assignment
- Explain the basic operation of blockchain technology.
- Describe three uses of blockchain beyond finance.
- List five advantages and five challenges of blockchain technology.
- Draw three linked blocks and label their contents and connections.
