LESSON PLAN: BASIC SOFTWARE CONCEPTS

BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define software correctly.
  2. Explain the difference between hardware and software.
  3. Identify the two major types of software.
  4. Explain the meaning of system software.
  5. Explain the meaning of application software.
  6. Define an operating system.
  7. Identify examples of operating systems.
  8. Identify common application software.
  9. State at least four functions of an operating system.

INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

  • Desktop or laptop computer
  • Smartphone or tablet
  • Computer with an operating system installed
  • Microsoft Word or another word processor
  • Web browser
  • Pictures/charts showing different software
  • Projector, where available
  • Whiteboard and marker

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students have previously learned about computer hardware and can identify physical components such as the keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer and system unit. Students may also have used smartphones, computers and other digital devices and interacted with different applications.

PRESENTATION STEPS

STEP TEACHER'S ACTIVITY STUDENTS' ACTIVITY
1. Introduction The teacher displays a computer and asks students: "We know the keyboard, monitor and mouse are physical parts of a computer. What tells these parts what to do?" Students respond based on their previous knowledge and experience with computers and smartphones.
2. Meaning of Software The teacher explains that software consists of programs and instructions that tell a computer or digital device what to do. The teacher contrasts software with hardware. Students listen, take notes and give examples of software they have used.
3. Types of Software The teacher introduces system software and application software and explains their differences using familiar examples. Students identify examples of system and application software.
4. System Software The teacher explains system software as software that manages computer hardware and provides a platform for other software. Examples such as Windows, Linux and Android are discussed. Students identify operating systems they have seen or used.
5. Operating System The teacher defines an operating system and explains its role in managing hardware, files, memory, applications and the user interface. Students mention functions of an operating system and observe the operating-system interface.
6. Application Software The teacher explains application software and demonstrates examples such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and web browsers. Students identify application software and state what each is used for.
7. Class Activity The teacher writes examples such as Windows, keyboard, Microsoft Word, monitor, Android and Google Chrome on the board and asks students to classify each as hardware or software and, where appropriate, as system or application software. Students classify the examples and explain their answers.
8. Evaluation & Summary The teacher asks oral questions, corrects students' responses and summarizes the major points of the lesson. Students answer questions and state what they have learned.

TEACHER'S REFLECTION

The teacher should assess students' ability to distinguish hardware from software, identify system and application software, recognize common operating systems and explain the basic functions of an operating system. Areas of difficulty should be revised before proceeding to the next lesson.
