Basic Software Concepts
Subject: Digital Technologies | Class: JSS 1 | Term: First Term | Week: 8
CLASS: JSS 1 (Basic 7)
TERM: First Term
WEEK: 8
DURATION: 80 Minutes
1. Introduction
In previous lessons, we learned about computer hardware, which refers to the physical parts of a computer that we can see and touch. However, hardware alone cannot perform useful tasks. A computer also needs instructions and programs to tell it what to do.
These programs and instructions are known as software.
For example, when you type a document using Microsoft Word, browse the internet using a web browser, or play a computer game, you are using software.
2. Meaning of Software
Unlike hardware, software does not have a physical form that can be touched. It runs on the hardware and enables the computer to perform different tasks.
Examples of Software
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge
- Windows
- Android
- Calculator applications
- Computer games
3. Types of Software
Software can be broadly divided into two major types:
- System Software
- Application Software
| Type | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| System Software | Software that manages and controls computer hardware and provides a platform for other software. | Windows, Linux, Android, device drivers |
| Application Software | Software designed to help users perform particular tasks. | Microsoft Word, Excel, web browsers, media players |
4. System Software
System software works behind the scenes to help the computer operate properly.
Examples of System Software
- Operating systems
- Device drivers
- Utility programs
5. Operating System
The operating system is one of the most important types of system software. Without a suitable operating system, most general-purpose computers and smartphones cannot be used conveniently by ordinary users.
Examples of Operating Systems
| Operating System | Common Use |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Windows | Desktop and laptop computers |
| Linux | Computers, servers and other systems |
| Android | Smartphones and tablets |
| iOS | iPhones and iPads |
| macOS | Apple Mac computers |
6. Functions of an Operating System
An operating system performs many important functions, including:
1. Managing Hardware
The operating system helps manage devices such as the keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, storage devices and other hardware.
2. Managing Files
It helps users create, save, organize, rename, copy and delete files and folders.
3. Running Applications
The operating system provides an environment in which application programs can run.
4. Providing a User Interface
The operating system provides a way for users to interact with the computer. This may be through a graphical user interface or other types of interfaces.
5. Managing Memory
The operating system helps allocate and manage computer memory while programs are running.
6. Managing Security
Modern operating systems provide security features that help protect users, files and computer resources.
7. Application Software
Application software is what users commonly interact with when carrying out particular activities such as writing documents, calculating figures, browsing the internet, editing pictures or playing media.
Examples of Application Software
| Application | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | Creating and editing documents |
| Microsoft Excel | Working with spreadsheets and calculations |
| Google Chrome | Browsing websites on the internet |
| Microsoft PowerPoint | Creating presentations |
| Media Player | Playing audio and video files |
| Paint/Image Editor | Creating or editing images |
8. System Software and Application Software
| System Software | Application Software |
|---|---|
| Controls and manages computer hardware. | Helps users perform specific tasks. |
| Provides a platform for applications. | Runs on top of the system software. |
| Works mainly in the background. | Usually interacts directly with the user. |
| Examples include Windows, Linux and Android. | Examples include Word, Excel and web browsers. |
9. Software and Hardware
Hardware and software work together. Neither is sufficient by itself for a useful computer system.
| Hardware | Software |
|---|---|
| Physical parts of a computer. | Programs and instructions. |
| Can be seen and touched. | Cannot be physically touched like hardware. |
| Examples: keyboard, monitor, mouse and printer. | Examples: Windows, Word, Chrome and Excel. |
10. Importance of Software
Software is important because it gives instructions to computer hardware and enables users to perform different activities.
- It controls and manages computer hardware.
- It allows users to create and edit documents.
- It enables internet browsing.
- It allows users to play music and videos.
- It helps users perform calculations.
- It allows users to create presentations.
- It supports communication and information sharing.
- It enables computers and smartphones to perform many different tasks.
11. Common Software Used by Students
| Software | What Students Can Use It For |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | Typing assignments and preparing documents |
| Microsoft PowerPoint | Preparing school presentations |
| Web Browser | Searching for information online |
| Calculator | Performing calculations |
| Media Player | Watching educational videos and listening to audio |
12. Why Software Must Be Maintained
Software should be properly maintained to keep computer systems secure and functioning effectively.
Good software practices include:
- Keeping software updated.
- Installing software from trusted sources.
- Using security software where appropriate.
- Avoiding suspicious downloads.
- Removing applications that are no longer needed.
- Backing up important files.
13. Class Activity
Activity 1: Identify whether each item is hardware or software.
| Item | Answer |
