Artificial Intelligence (AI) - JSS 2 Note

Artificial Intelligence (AI) - JSS 2 Digital Technologies

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Subject: Digital Technologies

Class: JSS 2

Term: Third Term

Week: 4

Topic: Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the meaning of artificial intelligence.
  2. Identify the basic types of AI.
  3. Give examples of AI applications in daily life.

1. Meaning of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer or machine to perform tasks that normally need human intelligence, such as learning, recognising, understanding language, making decisions and solving problems.

AI systems work by using large amounts of data and programs that help them find patterns and learn from examples. As they receive more data, they can improve at their tasks.

Example

A music app learns the kinds of songs you listen to and then suggests other songs you may like. It does this by studying data about what you and many other people have played.

Note: AI does not mean that a computer thinks and feels exactly like a human being. It means that a computer is programmed to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence.

2. Types of Artificial Intelligence

AI is commonly grouped into three basic types according to how capable it is.

Type of AI Meaning Example
Narrow AI (Weak AI) AI designed to perform one specific task or a small group of tasks. It cannot do tasks outside what it was built for. All the AI in use today is of this type. A voice assistant, a face recognition system, a spam filter.
General AI (Strong AI) AI that could learn, understand and perform any intellectual task a human being can. It does not yet exist. A machine that could think and learn like a human across many different tasks.
Super AI AI that would be more intelligent than human beings in almost every way. It is only an idea at present. Found mostly in science-fiction stories.
Remember: The AI that we use every day, such as in phones, apps and websites, is Narrow AI. General AI and Super AI do not yet exist.

3. Applications of AI in Daily Life

AI is already part of our daily lives, often without us noticing it.

Application How AI Is Used Example
Voice assistants Understand spoken commands and respond. Asking a phone to set an alarm or call someone.
Recommendations Suggest videos, music or products based on what a person likes. A video app suggesting what to watch next.
Navigation and maps Find the fastest route using traffic data. A map app suggesting a shorter route.
Spam filters Identify and separate unwanted emails and messages. Junk emails moved to the spam folder.
Face and fingerprint recognition Recognise a person to unlock a device. Unlocking a phone with your face.
Language translation Translate text or speech from one language to another. Translating a sentence on a phone.
Phone cameras Recognise faces, scenes and objects to improve photos. A camera that detects faces and adjusts focus.

4. Class Activity: Find the AI

Objective: Students will identify examples of AI in daily life and explain what the AI does.

Activity A: AI Hunt

  1. List five devices, apps or websites that you have used or seen being used.
  2. For each one, state whether it uses AI.
  3. If it uses AI, write down what the AI does.
  4. Record your answers in a table like the one below.
Device / App Uses AI? (Yes / No) What the AI Does

Activity B: Classify the Type of AI

Read each description and state whether it is Narrow AI, General AI or Super AI:

  1. A phone app that only recognises faces in photographs.
  2. A machine that can learn and perform any task a human can do.
  3. An email program that moves junk messages to the spam folder.
  4. A machine that is more intelligent than any human being in every way.

Questions for the Activity

  • Which examples of AI did you identify?
  • What task does each AI perform?
  • Which type of AI is used in all of your examples? Why?

5. Summary

  • Artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer or machine to perform tasks that normally need human intelligence.
  • AI systems learn from data and examples.
  • The three basic types of AI are Narrow AI, General AI and Super AI.
  • All the AI used today is Narrow AI. General AI and Super AI do not yet exist.
  • AI is used in daily life in voice assistants, recommendations, maps, spam filters, face recognition and translation.

  3. Name the three basic types of AI.
  4. What is Narrow AI? Give two examples.
  5. Which types of AI do not yet exist?
  6. State five applications of AI in daily life.
  7. Explain how AI is used in a voice assistant.
  8. How does a video or music app use AI to suggest things you may like?

7. Assignment
