Computer Safety Measures

Definition of Safety Measures

Safety measures are steps that computer users need to take to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. These measures are put in place to protect the users (you and I) while using the computer.

Key Safety Measures

  1. Good Sitting Posture

The sitting posture of the computer user should be comfortable to reduce backache, neck pains, wrist injuries, and eye strain. Your sitting posture should allow you to sit with both feet flat on the floor, and thighs at right angles to the body. The chair should be adjustable to support the lower back, while forearms should be kept parallel to the floor. Your eye level should be straight to the screen, and keep your wrists and hands relaxed as you type on the keyboard.

  2. Use of Anti-glare Protector

The use of an anti-glare protector helps protect the eyes against radioactive rays coming from the computer monitor. It is important to keep a distance of two feet between the eyes and the monitor when working on the computer. It is also very important to blink your eyes regularly, especially if you are working on a color monitor.

  3. Proper Positioning of Monitor Base

The monitor should be well positioned to stand very steadily and also to allow for adjustment sideways, up, or down while it is being used.

  4. Illuminating the Computer Room

The computer room should be well lit, ideally with fluorescent light. This enables one to clearly see what is being done on the computer and helps prevent eye strain from the monitor.

  5. Maintaining a Dust-free Environment

The environment where computers are kept and used should be dust-free. Computer laboratory floors should ideally be made with floor tiles and not rugs. The windows should be airtight and the room air-conditioned to minimize dust.

  6. Back up your data

Regularly back up your files to an external storage device, separate from your workplace. Encrypt and lock it away to minimize data loss risks from incidents like break-ins, fires, or floods.

  7. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication

Employ complex passwords (consider using three random words) for all accounts and devices. Additionally, enable multi-factor authentication to significantly enhance security.

  8. Be aware of your surroundings

When working in shared spaces, use privacy screens to prevent others from viewing your screen.

  9. Be cautious of suspicious emails

Look out for signs like bad grammar, urgent demands, and payment requests. Always verify with the sender if unsure before clicking links or opening attachments.

  10. Install anti-virus and malware protection

Keep your devices secure by using up-to-date anti-virus software. It helps protect against malware delivered through phishing attacks and other threats.

  11. Lock your device when unattended

Always lock your screen when stepping away from your desk. For longer absences, secure your device out of sight.

  12. Secure your Wi-Fi connection

Use strong passwords for Wi-Fi networks and consider using WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3) encryption for added protection.
