Digital Citizenship & Ethics

What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship is the ability to use technology and the internet in a way that is safe, legal, and respectful to others. Just as you are a citizen of Nigeria, you are a "Digital Citizen" when you use your phone or computer.

The 7 Pillars of a Good Digital Citizen

Being a citizen of the internet requires more than just having data. It requires Responsibility. Here are the seven core areas every student must master:

1. Digital Safety & Security

This is the "Lock and Key" of the internet. It involves protecting your identity from hackers.

  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Always use an extra code to log in.
  • Password Strength: Avoid using your name or "12345". Use symbols like @, #, and numbers.

2. Digital Etiquette (Netiquette)

Online manners are just as important as physical manners. Treat others with respect in comment sections and group chats.

The "THINK" Rule: Before you post, ask: Is it True? Helpful? Inspiring? Necessary? Kind?

3. Digital Literacy

This is the ability to identify "Fake News." In Nigeria, misinformation spreads fast on WhatsApp. A good citizen verifies news with trusted sources like BBC, NTA, or Premium Times before sharing.

4. Digital Footprint

Everything you do online leaves a permanent trail. Photos, comments, and likes can be seen by future universities or employers. "The Internet never forgets."

5. Digital Health & Wellness

Technology should not hurt your body. Practice Ergonomics by sitting straight and follow the 20-20-20 rule (look away from the screen every 20 minutes) to prevent eye strain.

6. Digital Law

The internet has rules. Cyberbullying, Hacking, and Plagiarism (stealing someone else's work) are not just bad habits—they are crimes under the Nigerian Cybercrime Act.

7. Digital Communication

Know which tool to use. Use Email for formal school messages and WhatsApp/Telegram for quick chats. Always be wary of "Stranger Danger" in direct messages.
