Digital Citizenship - JSS one Note
Digital Citizenship & Ethics
Mastering the New Digital Technologies Curriculum
What is Digital Citizenship?
Digital Citizenship is the ability to use technology and the internet in a way that is safe, legal, and respectful. Just as you are a citizen of Nigeria, you are a "Digital Citizen" when you use your phone or computer.
The 7 Pillars of a Good Digital Citizen
1. Digital Safety & Security
This involves protecting your identity from hackers. In the new curriculum, we call this Cyber-Hygiene.
- Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra shield to your accounts.
- Strong Passwords: Avoid birthdays or "1234". Mix symbols (@, #) and numbers.
2. Digital Etiquette (Netiquette)
Treating others with respect in comment sections and group chats.
3. Digital Literacy & Information Quality
Identifying "Fake News." Before sharing WhatsApp broadcasts, verify with trusted sources like BBC, NTA, or Premium Times.
4. Digital Footprint & Reputation
Everything you do online leaves a permanent trail. "The Internet never forgets." This footprint can affect your admission into universities abroad or in Nigeria.
5. Digital Health & Wellness
[Image of proper computer ergonomics and posture]Technology should not hurt your body. Practice Ergonomics (sitting straight) and follow the 20-20-20 rule to prevent eye strain.
6. Digital Law & Intellectual Property
Cyberbullying and Hacking are crimes under the Nigerian Cybercrime Act. Also, avoid Plagiarism—always give credit when you use someone's image or text.
7. Digital Communication
Use the right tool for the job. Email for school/formal work, and WhatsApp for social chats. Be wary of "Stranger Danger" in DMs.
