BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Explain at least four reasons why poultry birds require adequate housing.
2. Compare and contrast the three major poultry housing systems (Free-range, Semi-intensive, Intensive).
3. Identify essential requirements of a good poultry house and list common local construction materials.

INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

• Charts and diagrams illustrating Deep Litter and Battery Cage setups.
• Samples of housing materials: wood shavings, sawdust, wire mesh, corrugated roofing sheet, concrete block.
• Miniature model or pictures of a commercial poultry house layout showing orientation and ventilation mesh.

Students know that birds need shelter from predators and rain, having observed coop structures in their neighborhood.

PRESENTATION STEPS

Step 3: Systems of Housing	Differentiates between Free-Range, Fold/Semi-Intensive, and Intensive systems (Deep Litter vs. Battery Cage).	Examine structural charts and classify housing types based on stocking density and control level.
Step 4: Requirements & Materials	Passes around building material samples (litter, wire mesh) and outlines key design rules (East-West orientation, proper ventilation).	Inspect samples, discuss floor space requirements, and sketch basic house orientation.
Step 5: Evaluation & Summary	Summarizes the lesson and asks evaluation questions to confirm understanding.	Answer evaluation questions and copy down homework instructions.
