LESSON PLAN: LIVESTOCK FARMING

Duration: 80 Minutes (Double Period)

BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  1. Differentiate clearly between local and exotic breeds of poultry.
  2. Classify poultry breeds based on their economic purpose (Broilers, Layers, Cockerels, Dual-purpose).
  3. Outline at least three distinct characteristics of each poultry category.

INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

  • Wall charts showing exotic breeds (White Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock) and local chicken varieties.
  • Live specimens or clear picture cards comparing local vs. commercial broiler and layer birds.
  • Samples of brown and white eggs, feather specimens, and live chick pictures.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students can identify basic poultry birds like chickens and turkeys from Week 2 lessons and their home surroundings.

PRESENTATION STEPS

Step Teacher's Activity Students' Activity
Step 1: Introduction Reviews Week 2 and asks students why some chickens in local markets are large and white while local village chickens are small and multicolored. Share observations regarding size, color, growth speed, and egg production differences.
Step 2: Local vs Exotic Breeds Defines "breed", explains origin differences between indigenous (local) and imported (exotic) breeds. Note definitions and compare growth rates of local vs. exotic breeds.
Step 3: Functional Classification Explains functional categories: Broilers (meat), Layers (eggs), Cockerels (hardy meat/slow growth), Dual-purpose. Group various named breeds under their correct production purpose.
Step 4: Breed Characteristics Displays charts showing distinct traits (comb type, body shape, feed conversion, egg yield). Observe features on wall charts and copy main characteristics into notebooks.
Step 5: Evaluation & Summary Summarizes the topic and asks revision questions to gauge student comprehension. Respond to evaluation questions and copy the home assignment.

EVALUATION QUESTIONS

  1. What is a breed of poultry?
  2. Differentiate between local breeds and exotic breeds of chicken with two characteristics each.
  3. Classify exotic chickens according to their production purposes and give one example of each.
