LESSON PLAN: HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL DEVICES
| Subject | Digital Technologies |
| Class | JSS 1 (Basic 7) |
| Term | First Term |
| Week | 2 |
| Topic | Historical Development of Digital Devices |
| Subtopics |
1. Early Calculating Tools 2. Generations of Computers 3. Evolution from Analog to Digital Devices 4. Modern Digital Trends |
| Duration | 80 Minutes (Double Period) |
BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Identify some early calculating tools used before modern computers.
- Describe the development of computers through different generations.
- Explain the difference between analog and digital devices in simple terms.
- Describe how computers and digital devices have changed over time.
- Identify some modern trends in digital technology.
INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS
- Abacus
- Pictures or chart of Napier's Bones
- Computer-generation charts
- Pictures of early computers
- Pictures of modern digital devices
- Projector or computer system
- Whiteboard and marker
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Students have already learned about digital technology and common digital devices in Week 1. They are familiar with devices such as smartphones, computers, tablets, televisions, and digital cameras.
The teacher should use these familiar devices to introduce the idea that modern digital devices developed gradually from earlier tools and machines.
PRESENTATION
| Step | ```Teacher's Activity | Students' Activity | ```
|---|---|---|
| 1. Introduction | ```
The teacher revises the previous lesson by asking students to define
digital technology and mention examples of digital devices.
The teacher then asks: "Did people have smartphones and computers hundreds of years ago?" and introduces the historical development of digital devices. |
Students answer the revision questions and share what they know about old and modern devices. | ```
| 2. Early Calculating Tools | ```
The teacher explains that people used different tools to help them
count and perform calculations before modern computers were invented.
The teacher introduces the Abacus and Napier's Bones, showing pictures or actual examples where available. The teacher explains the basic purpose of each tool. |
Students observe the displayed materials, identify the tools, and explain what they think the tools were used for. | ```
| 3. Generations of Computers | ```
The teacher explains that computers developed in stages known as
generations.
The teacher introduces the major computer generations and explains that each generation brought improvements in size, speed, storage, reliability, and performance. The teacher uses a chart or pictures to help students compare early computers with modern computers. |
Students observe the computer-generation chart and identify some differences between early and modern computers. | ```
| 4. Analog to Digital | ```
The teacher explains that technology has changed from many
traditional or analog systems to digital systems.
Simple examples are given, such as traditional clocks compared with digital clocks and older methods of storing information compared with digital storage. The teacher emphasizes that digital technology allows information to be processed, stored, and shared electronically. |
Students observe the examples and identify differences between analog and digital devices. | ```
| 5. Modern Digital Trends | ```
The teacher introduces examples of modern digital trends such as
smartphones, cloud services, artificial intelligence, robotics,
smart devices, and improved internet services.
The teacher explains that digital technology continues to develop and become more useful in everyday life. |
Students mention modern digital devices or technologies they have seen or used and discuss their uses. | ```
| 6. Class Activity | ```
The teacher divides students into small groups. Each group is asked
to compare an old calculating or computing tool with a modern digital
device.
Groups present their observations to the class. |
Students work in groups, compare the devices, and present their findings to the class. | ```
| 7. Evaluation & Summary | ```The teacher asks evaluation questions and summarizes the major points covered in the lesson. | Students answer the questions and participate in the lesson summary. | ```
EVALUATION QUESTIONS
- What is an Abacus?
- Mention one early calculating tool other than the Abacus.
- What are computer generations?
- State two ways modern computers differ from early computers.
- What is meant by the evolution from analog to digital technology?
- Mention two examples of modern digital technology.
ASSIGNMENT
- Draw an Abacus and label its important parts.
- Write a short note on Napier's Bones.
- List the five major generations of computers.
- Mention three modern digital technologies and state one use of each.
