BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. State general hygiene rules essential for maintaining health on a livestock farm.
2. Describe safe practices for handling, applying, and storing agricultural chemicals.
3. List and identify Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used to ensure personal safety on the farm.

INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): rubber boots, nose masks, hand gloves, safety goggles, aprons/overalls.
• Empty agricultural chemical containers displaying hazard symbols (pesticides, disinfectants, acaricides).
• Farm safety instruction charts and hazard symbol posters (Toxic, Flammable, Corrosive).

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students studied farm biosecurity and sanitation in JSS 2 and know that dirty environments foster pathogens and that chemicals like disinfectants must be used carefully.

PRESENTATION STEPS

Step 1: Introduction	Asks students to identify potential hazards on a livestock farm (e.g., animal kicks, chemical inhalation, slippery floors).	Mention hazards such as bull kicks, toxic dip fumes, sharp tools, and contaminated water.
Step 2: Farm Hygiene Rules	Explains key hygiene principles: daily pen cleaning, waste removal, clean water provision, and worker sanitation routines.	Listen attentively and record basic farm hygiene rules in their exercise books.
Step 3: Safe Chemical Handling	Discusses types of farm chemicals (acaricides, disinfectants, dewormers), reading container labels, correct dilution ratios, and safe storage away from children/food.	Examine sample chemical labels, identify warning signs (skull/crossbones), and learn storage safety rules.
Step 4: Personal Protective Equipment	Displays PPE items (boots, gloves, masks, goggles, coveralls) and demonstrates how each item protects the farm worker.	Identify PPE items, state which body parts they protect, and practice proper wearing techniques.
Step 5: Evaluation & Summary	Summarizes safety rules on the board and asks assessment questions to evaluate learning.	Answer evaluation questions orally and write down homework instructions.
