  • Computer laboratory, where available.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE / ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Students are familiar with computers and other digital devices from their previous lessons on digital technologies. They can identify common devices such as keyboards, monitors and mice. The teacher will use these familiar devices to introduce the concept of computer hardware and the different functions performed by hardware components.

PRESENTATION STEPS

STEP TEACHER'S ACTIVITY STUDENTS' ACTIVITY
1. Introduction The teacher displays a computer, laptop or pictures of computer components and asks students to identify the parts they can see and touch. The teacher asks questions such as: "What are these physical parts of a computer called?" and "What functions do they perform?" The teacher introduces the topic as Computer Hardware. Students observe the displayed devices and identify familiar computer components. They respond to the teacher's questions based on their previous knowledge.
2. Meaning of Computer Hardware The teacher explains that computer hardware refers to the physical components of a computer system that can be seen and touched. The teacher gives examples such as the keyboard, mouse, monitor, CPU, printer and storage devices. Students listen to the explanation, observe the examples and write the definition of computer hardware in their notes.
3. Input Devices The teacher explains that input devices are used to enter data and instructions into a computer. The teacher displays or shows examples such as the keyboard, mouse, scanner, microphone, webcam, joystick and touchscreen, and explains their functions. Students identify the input devices shown and state what each device is used for. They record the examples and functions in their notebooks.
4. Output Devices The teacher explains that output devices present processed information to the user. The teacher demonstrates or displays examples such as the monitor, printer, speakers, headphones and projector. Students identify the output devices and explain the type of information produced by each, such as visual, printed or audio output.
5. Storage Devices The teacher explains that storage devices are used to store data, programs and information. The teacher introduces primary storage, including RAM and ROM, and secondary storage such as HDDs, SSDs, USB flash drives, memory cards and optical discs. Students observe the storage devices and identify examples of primary and secondary storage. They explain why information needs to be stored for future use.
6. System Devices The teacher explains that system devices are important hardware components involved in the basic operation and processing of a computer system. The teacher introduces the CPU, motherboard, system memory and power supply unit, and explains their functions. Students identify the system devices and state their basic functions. They explain the role of the CPU in processing data and instructions.
7. Peripheral Devices The teacher defines peripheral devices as hardware devices connected to a computer to provide additional input, output, storage or communication functions. Examples such as keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, webcams and external storage devices are discussed. Students identify peripheral devices and explain how they extend or provide additional functions to a computer system.
8. Hardware Classification Activity The teacher displays or distributes cards containing names or pictures of hardware devices. Students are instructed to classify each device as an input, output, storage, system or peripheral device where appropriate. Students work individually or in groups to classify the devices and explain the reasons for their classification.
9. Class Discussion The teacher leads a discussion on how the different hardware components work together. The teacher asks students to explain what happens when a user types information, processes it, views the result and saves the information. Students describe how input, processing, output and storage devices work together during a normal computer task.
10. Evaluation and Summary The teacher asks oral questions about the different categories of computer hardware, corrects misconceptions and summarizes the major points of the lesson. Students answer the questions, ask questions where necessary and summarize the lesson in their own words.

EVALUATION QUESTIONS

  1. What is computer hardware?
  2. Mention four input devices.
  3. State the function of a keyboard and a mouse.
  4. What is an output device?
  5. Mention four output devices.
  6. What is a storage device?
  7. Differentiate between primary and secondary storage.
  8. Mention four secondary storage devices.
  9. What is the function of the CPU?
  10. What is a peripheral device?
  11. Mention four examples of peripheral devices.
  12. Classify the following as input, output, storage or system devices: keyboard, monitor, SSD, scanner and CPU.

ASSIGNMENT

  1. Define computer hardware and explain why hardware is important to a computer system.
  2. Draw and label five computer hardware devices and state one function of each.
  3. Prepare a table showing ten computer hardware devices, their categories and their functions.
  4. Explain the difference between input devices and output devices, giving four examples of each.
  5. Differentiate between primary and secondary storage and give two examples of each.
  6. Explain the difference between system devices and peripheral devices.

TEACHER'S REFLECTION

Students should be able to define computer hardware, identify and classify common hardware devices, explain the functions of input, output and storage devices, and distinguish between system and peripheral devices. The teacher should observe students' ability to identify actual hardware components and correctly classify them. Additional practical demonstrations should be provided for students who have difficulty distinguishing between the different categories of hardware.
