BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Define animal feed and feedstuffs clearly.
2. Classify livestock feedstuffs into energy concentrates, protein supplements, roughages, and minerals/vitamins.
3. List and match common examples of feed ingredients (e.g., maize, groundnut cake, bone meal, forage grasses) to their respective classes.

INSTRUCTIONAL / TEACHING AIDS

• Real samples of feed ingredients in labeled transparent jars/containers (maize grains, wheat offal, groundnut cake, fish meal, bone meal, oyster shell).
• Freshly cut grass/forage samples (e.g., Elephant grass, Centrosema).
• Wall chart illustrating the classification of feedstuffs with pictures.

Students know that farm animals need food to grow and produce meat or eggs, similar to how human beings require balanced diets for energy and health.

PRESENTATION STEPS

Step 2: Definitions	Defines animal feed and feedstuff. Explains the difference between raw feed ingredients and finished mixed feeds.	Listen attentively and record definitions in their exercise books.
Step 3: Feed Classification	Outlines the four main classes: Carbohydrates/Energy, Proteins, Roughages, and Minerals/Vitamins. Explains the function of each class.	Observe displayed real samples, examine textures, and group them according to the classes mentioned.
Step 4: Identification & Sources	Passes around sample containers of maize, groundnut cake, fish meal, bone meal, and forage grasses. Explains plant vs. animal sources of protein.	Touch, observe, and correctly name the feed ingredients in each container.
Step 5: Evaluation & Summary	Summarizes the classification scheme using a flowchart on the chalkboard and conducts an oral quiz.	Answer evaluation questions and copy the summary flowchart.
